Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pointless Rant

So as long as i've been on these forums ive read a few threads on the commuting section where people waive to "Roadies" and we dont even acknowledge them. Well today on my ride i saw a bearded man on his recumbent so i go to waive and this guy might as well have givin me the middle finger. WTF lol i'm done being nice.

generalizations about "roadies" or "commuters" are about as stupid as anything. I wave if I'm on a nice casual ride, generally not if I'm doing intervals or on a hard group ride. Some people I know don't wave at all, some always wave. wtf does it matter.

I agree, pointless.

As far as waving, I always wave but sometimes I just kind of flip some fingers up to wave. I'm sure that some have thought that I didn't wave at all so they thought I was a jerk. I'm okay with that.

hahaha that sucks man

but that said sometimes even on foot, you can see a friendly neighbor or, some one you "kinda know" and you wave at them and they give you "that look" as well

I don't understand. What rights were you waiving exactly? The right of way on the road?

I'm with you. Commuters in their flourescent vests and general look of sour faced misery are the worst people to wave to. I waved at one once. never again. I got a look from him like he just trod in something smelly.

If you have time to wave, you're not riding hard enough.

I wave/nod to most people be they runners, dog walkers, cyclist, bent-ers, etc. Some ignore me but I don't know if they even saw me so I don't really worry about it. I know there are times when I didn't see them too. Just be nice to everyone and f-em if they aren't nice back. Maybe next time they will be.
