Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is probably a dumb question, but right now I don't have time to sift through 110+ pages in this thread, but my road bike weighs nearly 22 lbs right now. I have no carbon parts whatsoever, and I'm not exactly sure that it matters. Excepting the frame, what the most likely to be the heaviest part of my bike? My guess is the wheels; I doubt it'll drastically lower the weight, but seriously, how're you guys getting your bikes so light?

lighter wheels WILL more than likely drastically lower the weight of your bike and it will improve the feel and the handling as well.

how well do those cages hold your bottles? any idea what they weigh?

They hold really well. Very snug fitting and they were pretty cheap from Stradalli off of eBay.

They weigh 22g each.

Its a concept that I didn't really understand until I started to break down the weight of each item on my bike. If you really want to do some homework, start looking up the total weight of your accessories by grams. There are 452g in a lb. Which helps you understand how changing out parts can make a drastic difference. Here are some examples:

I'm swapping out my stem, seat post and bars this coming year. My current set up isn't bad, its just not super light.

Thomson stem 178g
Thomson seat post (about) 220g
Ritchey carbon pro 256
So here are my plans to complete by the new year.

Ritchey super logic bars (190g)
Ritchey C260stem (103g)
Ritchey super logic 1 bolt seat post (171)

Plus im swapping out stock items to these:
Kcnc skewers(42g)
Kcnc 3mm spacers(1.7g)
Aerozine seat post clamp (9g)
Aerozine chain ring bolts (9g/set)
Dura ace front derailleur 68g) already did this. 105 fd was 136g!
Dura ace rear derailleur (159g)
Praxis chain ring(50/34)

Savings of....596g!!! (Again 452g/lb)

Think of your stock wheels. Maybe 2200g. You get a lighter 1500g set and you just dropped a pound and a half. It all adds up, even the very small things that you would think to make a difference.

This is what I switched to after my scott addict sl. I wanted to go aero-- the frameset is about 1 pound heavier than the addict frameset (taking into account the seatposts). This setup is 13.96lbs, but I've started working on the seatpost- ti bolts for the clamp, I'm having a carbon cradle made and I'm ordering alloy yokes for clamping the saddle, either alu or ti bolts for the seatpost clamp (it's a 2 bolt system). I could probably remove some material on the seatpost clamp as well, but I'm not breaking out the dremel. I also need to make a new set of hoods out of heat shrink tubes. That and the ciamillo cranks seem to be dropping weight by the day.

When I put my tubulars on there it should drop the weight by about a 1.25 pounds as well.

Recent updates to my Specialized Allez (which was 18.15 lb.)
- Merek Carbon Saddle and Seatpost uncut (120g + 180g = 300g)
- Bike Hub Store Titanium Skewers (45g)
Total Cost: $225 and weight 345g

Previous items on bike:
- Specialized Romin Saddle and Seatpost (245g + 275g = 520g)
- Mavic Generic Skewers (110g)
Total Weight: 630g

That is 285g for $225 which lowers my bike weight from 18.15 lb. to 17.52 lb.
This is also with a frameset that weighs 2000g (1400g frame and 600g fork)

Next step is to either go with tubulars or a CAAD10 frameset+bb30 crankset....either way I am looking at a pound.

Nice! Aero, and light is right! Have you thought about having Jure build you a custom combo? That would drop some weight I am sure.

Yeah, Jure is actually making the carbon cradle for the post. At the time he would have needed my seatpost and put a saddle directly on it as it would be too expensive to make a mold for the aero post. Of course I was just able to pick up a 2nd post directly from Blue, which I'll keep until I'm ready (read: have the money) for something like that. I still need to tweak my position on this one anyway, and I'm in on the ciamillo (zero gravity) crankset, which seems to be getting lighter by the day!

Good stuff. Jure, is the man. Definitely a good idea to get your position figured out first. It took me a few years to get mine 100% dialed in, and now it is perfect with the Jure combo. It dropped 1/4lb off my old setup with a tuned S2 post, and a SLR Kit Carbonio.

Well, I picked up a campy chorus QS FD on the cheap and switched out my tuning kit from the older chorus FD. The good news is the ti spring works much better with this FD and I went down to 57g on a fully functional FD. On the aesthetics front, the carbon outer plate looks much better on this one than the silver alloy cage.

Now I'm waiting for my carbon cradle to arrive for my seatpost. I was able to get some kcnc yokes so I dropped a little over 30g there. Hopefully between now and x-mas I'll be inspired to make some new hoods out of heatshrink tubing to drop some more weight.

Gave up on the Ciamillo gravitas crankset and picked up a lightning sl crankset. With extralite rings and the BB30 bottom bracket the entire crankset came to 544g. Thing is, it would totally work w/ the zipp bb30 setup which would drop about 10g - 534g for a crankset is slightly insane.

I was most amazed by the improvements in the extralite rings. They used to suck so bad you couldn't use 'em. They shifted perfectly.

The vumaquads definitely have a better look to them and I probably could have used lightning's BB configurations for just about any frame, but the fact that they don't make them anymore and the 4 bolt pattern leaves no options for different chainring combos kind of killed it for me.

Also dropped about 100g by switching from schwalbe blizzard tires (700 x 25) to schwalbe durano tires (700 x 23) and going to latex tubes.

Vumaquads are sold.

Bike weighs 13.75 lbs with computer (w/ clinchers), I lose at least 1 lb w/ the enve tubulars but that waits for the spring. Still I want a neilpryde, either the alize or the bura sl. They are just bad ass!

Better off without the Ciamillo Crank. Durability is a big ? and their customer service is rock bottom.
My S-works crank is 570gmish with Sram rings and steel bearings. love the looks too. It's an '11 with UD finish. I removed the white stripe and clearcoated it, nice clean lines.

More than a little BMC influence styling wise. But a real beauty all the same.

You have no idea-- when I pulled out I got the "we just need to move some money around so you'll have your refund shortly" deal. Phone call to the credit card customer service dept and I had to dispute it. I was told I'd be refunded twice. After the 2nd time didn't happen I sent in my documentation. Then there's the PM's I exchanged with someone tied to ZG overseas. Confirmed what I was worried about-- that refund wasn't going to happen anytime soon (if ever). I'm sending that in as part of the dispute as well. No more ZG for me.

Yeah, can't believe the members over on WWs were actually sending $ to that grifter. After the numerous nightmarish experiences related in past threads. PT Barnum? HE AIN'T NEVER TOLD A LIE!

I hope to be posting some pics in the next couple of weeks-- seems as if I've somehow snagged one of the only bura sl framesets in size small in the US and it should be here sometime next week. Then the real fun starts! Also getting a MCFK setback post to go with it!
