Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Damn that's a steal. I really like the Scapula F Aero, but $1,900 is just too much money for a fork, and brake.

I'm joining in on the weight reduction. I converted one of my old steel bikes to 10 speed and realized it was stupid, so I'm replacing the frame and lots of other parts. There are so many parts I can save like 200g each on it's crazy.

Here ya go:

The scrapes in the decals are due to improper installation and not the fault of the post or saddle.

nice you snagged the rare 1" steerer huh? I sold mine recently and was pleasantly surprised on how much it went for. To think just last year they were going for under $200 brand new on eBay sellers.

now its the tapered enve/edge forks that are selling for a premium used/new.

I'm doing some serious weight reduction because I'm going to start racing this year:

I'm going to convert this from 9-10 speed and try to get it down to 17.xxlbs

Naturally the first thing that needs to be replaced is the frameset. I think it weighs 6+lbs. I'm not sure since I don't have a scale yet, but I'm guessing there's 400+ grams to be had from the seat post and bars / stem alone. The current seat post is a cheap (heavy) ebay one since this frame uses an odd size (26.6), always irked me with this bike. Anyhow, the only desirable frameset in my budget / size happened to be a random "fort" made from columbus aluthron with a 1" kestrel threadless carbon fork. I have no idea how much it weighs but I'll find out soon enough, I'm hoping not much more than 2000g for the frameset? I don't really know what to expect. It's definitely ghetto compared to most of your guys' bikes though.

The wheelset I'm using has dura ace hubs with open pro rims. Also not sure how much these weigh (again, will weigh them soon). Going to use gp4000s tires (have one already) and lunar light tubes I guess.

I bought deda newton handlebars for $15 on ebay along with some deda stem that supposedly weighs 130 grams, for $20. The shim I need for 1"-1 1/8" will add some weight unfortunately but I wanted the oversize bars. I want to get a light seat post but I haven't decided how much I want to spend.

I'll get into the rest of the parts and weights later but this is where I'm at right now. Do you guys think sub 18lbs is realistic? I'm not sure how much the steel bike weighed (I only had a crappy analog scale, just ordered a much more accurate digital one) and it's taken apart now. I'm guessing 21-22lbs.

Nice project. Depending on the frame you can get steel pretty light. My Centurion was in the high 17's in that pic. Not bad for a 25 year old steel frame.

Gracias - Bike is right at 16 pounds right now. Didn't get the whole group - just the cranks. I got them from the bike shop that I mentioned that has several Red cranks they're selling very cheap. If anyone's interested they have 3 more.

Ha! I think they've all pretty much been posted. I think a lot of them are in my Hot or Not thread. The Giant kicked it off.

aren't the red cranks the heaviest (as compared to other grouppos) or really heavy? I always assumed thats why brands pop on the fsa/hollowtech/ect cranks onto their force/red equipped bikes - to save weight.

my red cranks (172.5 53/39) came it at 657g.

Ravenmore, so what did the Red crank weigh? ive heard the large chainring is a little heavy so you could always replace it later to save some weight. to bad they dont have a BB30 crank or i would get one from you.i think ive decided to order a new Force or Red crankset instead of a fork for the Fuji .

the 3T parts should be here tomorrow. ill try to get some pics up after they arrive or at least some weights.

Yeah they are pretty good. Pretty stiff too. Mine with Chris King BB, and KCNC big ring 53/39 was 727g. Pretty good for the price. I swapped it all onto the Trek, when I put the Lightning on the Cervelo.

My Red crank is the same size as runningdoc's. I didn't weigh it, but it should be within a few grams. 650'ish grams is pretty good for a crank with an integrated spindle, unless you get something exotic. My Campagnolo cranks on the S-Works is just a few grams lighter. Yeah, I could change chain rings and make it lighter - I like how it looks though.

btw - I didn't use the spacers that came with the bottom bracket shell, and now I have a little gap between the crank and the bearing seal on each side. Anyone know if that is a big deal? Noticed one of the other Red cranks on the ride I went on this morning had the same little gap.

question for you WWies. i ran into a bit of trouble with my project. I purchased a USE alien seatpost (150g @ 31.8. not bad). and then a toupe ti saddle (163g). the problem is, they don't seem to be compatible. the rails of the toupe are round and don't seem to fit. previously i had a selle italia flite (245g) - and i now notice it has slightly oval rails. i didn't know incompatibility issues like this existed. suggestions? am i stuck ditching either the saddle or seatpost? i don't really want too since i got great deals on both...
