Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tough ride

Wow - tough ride today. Temps in the 30's and 40's and about 30 miles in it started drizzling. To boot I got to ride on a wet road caked with cow manure. On top of that I bonked horribly and the last 20 miles were pure torture. Dear hard, cold wet roads - see you tomorrow.

Bikes: Trek Mountain Track converted to a CX, Cannondale R800 frameset being built up

Here in WV, we've had a mix of snow and ice with some ice and snow. Flat rail trails are fine with my CX, but when climbing in this sort of weather, knowing that you'll have to come back down without busting your ass, is a bit of a daunting idea. Much rather snow and ice than not-nearly-frozen rain and cold. Kudos to you gladiator-like sir.

I did 40 miles a few weeks ago and bonked. It was really rare. I pushed almost as hard as I could for the first hour and after forgetting to eat and drink, bonked about five miles from the finish.

+1 - We hit it really hard on the way out, plus I really didn't eat or drink right before the ride.
