Watching the Tour Down Under is always painful. Before that, I only catch the good weather vibe from southern US folks on BF, and they are limited to a few pictures usually. Watching video of great weather in high def sucks when it's sleeting outside here.

Don't worry, while today reached a nice sunny 23C, this evening is quite cool again. I'm sitting here wrapped in a blanket.

Here is the Tour Down Under weather:

They are not having one of their hot spells just now, which is probably a good thing for the cyclists.

How bad does ice wear down the active mechanical components?

Just imagine anything that isn't waterproof (aluminum, stainless steel, etc...) with ice lodged in it then melting and
corroding anything it sits on/in, not to mention the horror of salt and slush degrading your brake pads and the mess
that makes.

I rode in weather that bad "once". I ended up spending more time cleaning my bike than I did riding it.
I'll only ride in cold weather when the roads are (and the day is) dry; at least with my road bike.

2ndGen 01-18-11 06:36 PM

Today, it was actually not bad out temperature-wise (close to 40).
My very first thought was "Wow! I could be nice to ride tomorrow!"
Then I looked around at the slush-filled streets around me and thought...

"F#@k! When is Spring going to get here already!"

:winter2:

I always ride my bikes during the Winter and the worst I have had to do was replace a bottom bracket. Four months of riding for something as simple a a bottom bracket seems worth it to me.

WV is different than NY. Our snow is filthy, full of salt, city grime, oil, you name it.
It ain't no where near as clean as West (by god) Virginia.
:)

You are makin scuses again. Do you have rollers? I saw a thread on here somewhere for homemade rollers. If you want to compete in races, you will need to ride in a super straight line right? I read that rollers were good for that. I also read something about blocks for the indoor trainer or rollers, but I absolutely let that go in one eye and out the other and can't remember what it said at all.

mzeffex 01-18-11 08:17 PM

It was all icy outside today. No riding, however I did buy some bike tools and worked on bikes.

Tell you what Mac...send me "your" bike, and I'll ride it with no worries.

PS...Don't assume that I'm "not" riding...it makes a...well, you know.
Don't assume that I don't ride in West Virginia either even though I live in NY.
Matter of fact, don't assume at all.

:D

You should reread, I think you answered someone elses post.

My bike has pink and white girly designs on it, I'm quite certain you're not man enough to handle it.

Just 2 more weeks until the "countdown" begins!
I can't believe we're almost 1/2 way through winter already!

February 4th is the exact middle of winter...after that,
it's just a matter of counting down the days until The Spring starts!

Cabin Fever, halfway over with! Finally! Something to look forward to!

Booooo!

Are you kidding?

I'm thinking about getting bright vernice red Sidi Ergo 2's just to dare one of the
road nazis to say something about how they don't match my bike ninja black kits!

:D

Snapperhead 01-21-11 08:37 AM

I vowed to ride more this winter, and I have pretty much done that on the weekends when there hasn't been snow on the ground and/or 30+ mph winds. My commute is long so riding during the week is impossible as it's pretty close to dark when I get home.

On the up side, the wife and I have been spending a lot more "quality" time together this winter, if you get my drift! ;)

You're very optimistic. I look at that and say "holy crap we aren't even half way done with winter yet?"

As good a reason as any to "not" ride! ;)

Think about it like this...starting today, you can countdown to the countdown date
(February 4 lands on the Friday after next Friday).

I'm sitting here griping over winter-related purchases and it's pretty much gone.
So, focus is changing to gearing up for The Spring. And F it...I'm going riding with what I have.
Today? We got slammed with 9" of snow.
But the roads should be dry and clear tomorrow
and 22 degrees for a high with no wind is okay.

:D

So....
Tell me about the tax rates in SoCal. I was there recently- and it looks really nice from the visitor point of view.

TnBama 01-24-11 04:47 PM
