Trek 1.5 Compact?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fine bike. Easy to fit to most riders. Quality and features are comparable to similarly priced bikes from other major manufacturers.

For some reason I have never ridden a trek bike I was comfortable on. I do have a number of friends that love them though. Make sure you try a few brands and make sure it works for you. If you like the ride, they are nice bikes.

MTB88,

If it fits you, it's a great first road bike. Plus, it will help you with your MTBing.
It was my first road bike after I got off of MTB's and joined the Dark Side.

I've had the 1.5 it's a great bike but it will leave you wanting more. I would suggest going for the 2.1

I love the bike. I hjave test road a lot of carbon bikes and it does not feel as good to me. I suppose I will get to it soon enough as I am addicted. Sure does make me more picky since I already have a bike I enjoy.

It'll help with mtbing? yeah, i thought it'd be cool to give road biking a try. The 2.1 would be nice, but $1000 is about all I can handle, and even that's pushing it! haha

You could always upgrade later, but for now, the 1.5 is an ideal bike to get going on.
Once you've learned what type of cycling you like to do on a road bike, you can pick a more appropriate bike later.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

That's the bike I started looking at a few weeks ago. Slowly moved to the 2.1, then the 2.3. Bought a 4.5 last night. I'm surprised my wife didn't seem to mind.

It's a good bike - if it fits well and you feel good on it, then buy it.

Bikes: Trek 820 Madone 6.2. Trek 2.1

It was the bike I was originally going to get that I could afford last summer. Decided to wait until this spring and then through an awards program ended up with a 6.2.

The 1.5 is a great bike and will do you right.

I went from a Trek 1.5 to a Cannondale CAAD9.
The CAAD is a more aggressive ride.
The 1.5 is a more comfortable ride.

In that price range, you'd be looking at a CAAD8.
Not as racy as the CAAD9, but more so than the 1.5.
I'm throwing that out there so that you can notice how they ride when you test either.

Thanks! I did test out a Caad 9, but ended up going with the 1.5 simply based on the price. Got to take my first real ride this evening... loving the bike so far. Completely different animal than a mountain bike

Congrats! Enjoy it.
Don't be surprised if you find yourself riding the 1.5 more than your MTB.

Bikes: 2010 Trek 1.5

I've enjoyed my 1.5, but I am already looking to buy a new more aggressive ride later this year. I will be keeping the 1.5 most likely for rain/trainer use.

Bikes: 2009 Trek XO-1, 2006 Trek 7000

I was going to go for a 1.5 but the LBS told me the 2.1 for the price difference was way better. I ended up getting a Trek XO-1 cyclocross bike and putting racing wheels on it ). Doesn't the 1.5 come with the same stock SSR wheelset? those things are HEAVY (they were on my 7000 hybrid). The 2.1 comes with Race wheels (1/2 the weight at least)

Think that is the same wheelset. They may be heavy, but compared to my mountain bike the whole thing is like a featherweight. haha

The next time you hit a nice run of Singletrack after having put a lot of miles on a road bike,
you're going to be surprised at how much farther you can ride without having to stop.
You're going to be able to climb on that MTB a whole lot better. You'll just feel stronger in every way.

The Trek 1.5 is a great bike to get started on. Even if you do decide to get something else in the future it can always become your rain bike. Be sure to check out brands like Jamis (Ventura) and Felt (F or Z series). I think they offer great bang for the buck.
