Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Time RSX Pedals engage with difficulty

Hi,
I bought a used Cannondale bike that came with Time RSX pedals.
The problem is, it is very difficult, next to impossible to engage them.
Is there any way to adjust the engagement force, like Look pedals?

They are much nicer than the Look pedals I have, but I will have to throw them away.

Thanks.

According to this review, it is not adjustable. Sorry.

Then the article is incorrect. There is a 3-way tension adjustment barrel on the crank side of the pedal between the spindle and the retention spring. It is adjusted using either a small (2.5 or 3mm, I think) allen wrench.

When RXS cleats are brand new they're a bit of a trick clicking in, and then it starts over again when they start to wear out. Be sure, though, that the toe lug is solidly engaged before forcing anything. The toe section of the pedal can break off.

On the plus side you get low weight, low stack height, durable cleats, and a very pleasantly elastic float function.

My wife's iclics don't have adjustable release tension either. The three-way adjustable barrel on her pedals adjust the "feel" or ease of angular float which is not the same as how easy it is to click in or out. Seemed like the rxs were the same way.

Bikes: breezer venturi - red novo bosberg - red, pedal force cg1 - red, neuvation f-100 - da, devinci phantom - xt, miele piste - miche/campy, bianchi reparto corse sbx, concorde squadra tsx - da, miele team issue sl - ultegra

When the cleats are new, put a bit of lube on them to ease entry for the first week or two, after that, they'll be golden.

There isn't any release adjustment on the Time RXS pedals.

Straight from the Time RXS Carbon manual:
The RXS TI CARBON, RXS CARBON,
RXS and RXL models feature the
S.E.T. adjustment to personalize your
sensation of float.
Three adjustments are possible, using a
2.5 mm allen wrench.
The adjustment passes automatically
to position 1 if you pass position 3.
RXS pedals as delivered are adjusted to
position 1 (maximum float).

I tried to remove the spring that holds the mechanism, but no luck.
The pedals look used, and when I do engage them, it makes a huge "click".
Sorry for the pedals, as they are much nicer than the current "Looks". You can walk easier with the cleats, too.

how used are the cleats. the brass of the cleat is softer than the spring/retention bar of the pedal and within a week or two will wear in nicely.

The spring that pushes on the retention bar that holds the cleat is the same one that regulates float resistance. Lighter spring tension makes entry and exit easier.

Pdedes' advice about lubricating and breaking in the brass bar on the cleat is spot on.

+2 to that. But I have finally figured out what goes on with the brass cleat. If you don't put a little lube on it, it quickly gets a load of scratches on it from the harder steel of the pedal. Then you have dry, scratched brass trying to slide into the steel lock and the friction is horrendous. The lube minimises the scratches in the first place and makes them almost irelevant anyway.

Petroleum jelly works fine and is cleaner than grease.
