Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend - April 2/3

Well ... farewell to DST. Today is the last day of DST here in Australia (or at least parts of Australia) and New Zealand. But meanwhile, Mexico is just starting DST ... lucky them!
https://www.timeanddate.com/

Did you get out for a bicycle ride today ... or some other exercise?

We did not. Instead we visited the city where we bought a new wash machine, did some "stock up" grocery shopping ........... and visited the closest store we would call an LBS (107 km away). It's not bad. Rowan builds wheels and gets his spokes there. And they often have decent clothing sales. I picked up a sports/cycling tank top.

We cycled 1027 km in March and have taken a couple days off the bicycle to take a break and do something different.

Tomorrow, we will cycle again.

Did a nice 30 mile ride this morning and Made it home before the family woke up. Got a nice ride and hand breakfast with the family. Couldn't ask for a better morning.

Although I try to cycle as often as possible, I also enjoy other forms of exercise. This weekend we moved 3200 lbs of construction material by aircraft to our remote cabin. We are in the final stages of completing the interior complete with off the grid solar, wood fired hot tub, cycle mounted on pontoons (hydrobike) for summer training, etc.

I spent many weekends staining and preparing t & g for the ceiling of the cabin. We loaded the Otter then 4 of us moved it up the hill into the cabin. We had to prepare a trail first, then move the lumber.

We completed a temporary loft to reach the cathedral ceilings in a few hours. These materials will be used for a new outhouse.

Otter load

Breaking trail (notice handlebars from hydrobike begging for use)

Hauling

Beautiful day to work

T & G hauled to temporary loft before installation

Visitors on the lake the next morning

T & G installed but not quite finished staining the trim

Downstairs wall finished up using bamboo flooring

Woodstove Flue trim

Friends flying out

While I'm at it, I've added a few more pics of the summer view.

arcticbiker - Beautiful area ... beautiful cabin. Approximately where is it located? And will you live there year round?

Cabin??? That's a bluddy mansion!!

Well done on the big move. I guess the exercise in moving all that stuff would amount to about... oh... a century on a bike.

The cabin is still a work in progress, but coming along. It's located west of Anchorage & south of Mt. McKinley by air. We won't live there year round, but spend a lot of time there regardless of season. This is our last trip until around Memorial Day due to breakup occuring soon.

BTW, we did make it back to town to go for a MTB ride for about 1 1/2 hrs. We still have some snow on the ground but studs will come off next week.

Today was chilly and windy ... and we opted to go to one of the coolest places in the area. We did a 28 km ride up and down Acheron Way ... and it was cold!

Friday, we drove down south to visit my parents, and got back yesterday late, so no riding those days.

Today, I rode 44 miles. Windy but nice otherwise. The bluebonnets are in bloom. I came back a slightly different way, and stopped by Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Several years ago, I had tried to photograph every single headstone in this cemetery for a website. But today, it was covered with bluebonnets in places.

Interesting day, Kathleen & I did a group ride with the Baltimore Area Triathalon Club (she joined up in anticipation of her first Triathalon in May).

Wow.

How much solar energy do you get there?

I've only installed 60 watts/hr for now. I use LED lighting & will be installing a 12v ceiling fan to help destratify the cabin while heating w/ wood. I use a car stereo driving large 70's speakers easily. I don't really need an inverter since my power needs are small. When necessary I use a Honda genset for tools, although battery operated tools are really good now.

I have a gravity water system w/ a propane demand heater. It uses a small 12v pump. So far I've had no power issues!

Congratulations!

And RKelley, I would assume that they bloom first farther south and work their way up, so y'all ought to have them down there, too, if they're not already gone!

Saturday 04/02/11-I had a very nice 25 mile ride
Sunday 04/03/11-I went into very strong head winds for 20 miles. The wind was very strong...the type that pushes you around when you are just standing there. There were points where maintaining 12mph on a flat road was a victory. It was definately a character building type ride...

That's quite effective - very pretty! I can't tell, but I'm wondering if those are the blue flowers that grow in the ditches here in November or so.
