Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Magnetic Bottle Cage

Watching the TOC coverage and Bob Roll shows a magnetic bottle holder.

Any early adopters out there?

Nope. I like the job the bolts are doing. The cages are always right where I left them and that's the way I likes it.

I like it. I'm trying to order them. This dude doesn't make it easy. Good engineer, terrible marketer. If this were my product I'd be a millionaire by now and it would be on all your stupid bikes.

Met the guy at an endurance sports expo. He had the saddest booth in the place, but a very intriguing product. Definitely not a cheap hack job. Works well, it seems!

Right. Good engineer. Bad marketer. I'd like to see if he has any other ideas, because this one is very good indeed.

I kind of liked the bottle that opened on both ends for cleaning. Ifit came in an insulated model I might look for it.

i have a few of those and they are awesome. makes it easy to clean out a bottle that had accelerade in it, which is no easy task. the brand is "clean bottle."

I've got one- been using it for the past 500mi or so. Hasn't fallen out even when full. With practice, I'd say it's slightly harder to replace a bottle without looking than with a traditional cage, but it does give a little more clearance for removal from tighter frames (I'm using it on a 54cm S2). It helps if you avoid changing your grip on the bottle before putting it back- then it goes back in first try no problem. If nothing else it looks nice.

No connection with the maker.

I guess my biggest concern is ease of replacing the bottle. Thanks for your comments.

I bought a Clean Bottle on a trip when I rented a bike. It uses PBA free plastic, but whatever plastic they use has a terrible odor.

I used it the first time after just rinsing it out. IT mad the Gatorade undrinkable. I washed it out, and let it sit open with both ends off for a day, and it still had the odor. Gave it a good wasinging with soap and water, towel dired it, and rinsed it another 5-6 times. Still had a strong odor and taste in the water.

I didn't try getting it through TSA in a carry on and just left it behind.

Price seems rather steep at $35. How much are just the Bottles?

I need at least 6-8 bottles, and they tend to get to the point they need replacing every year or so. This would be rather expensive.

Also, you'd have a problem with feed zones, because you couldn't get a bottle from yur team, or neutral support.

Less than 10 per bottle if you took the time to read the review everyone is harping on about!

these mounts are $40 each, 16g, doesn't look like they would get touched in a crash.

currently bottle cages are designed for round bottles, so no manufacturer can design an "aero" bottle that's compatible.
this thing would allow bike manufacturers to design bottles that work with their approach to aero tubing (e.g. cervelo vs. scott vs. felt, etc)

and as for compatibility - you already have to make sure that the bottles you buy aren't too big or small for the cages you buy. I almost bought some Tacx Tao, but i read that they will hold Camelback bottles too tightly.

it's a good idea.

No problem. I will also mention that it *is* possible to put the bottle back on in an incorrect position. If you angle it wrong, you can miss the dovetail feature, but the magnets will grab. If you weren't paying attention you might think the bottle is in place, but in reality it's not held on strongly. Not ideal. In practice, this hasn't been a problem for me on the road, though sometimes it concerns me enough to wiggle the bottle to make sure I put it back in the right place.

I would consider getting it for my cross bike. You don't want a cage on the bike during a race so that you can shoulder it effectively, but it would be nice to be able to take a bottle along during practice rides. I wonder if the bottle would survive a bumpy cross or trail ride?
