500 miles a month

That's 53 miles per day, that's just amazing. How far is work? Do you do anything special to recover after each day?

Probably did. I gotta say though, I'm absolutely impressed by some of the numbers I read here. Not saying that people lied or anything like that, but glad that some love riding as much as I do.

This guy...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Penseyres...trained by doing mega miles. He was faced with a challenge from Jonathan Boyer a professional rider. He changed his training from big miles to more high intensity training. The result was that he rode across the country at 15.4 mph....a record. BTW, Boyer declined to ride that year.

I've changed my riding from trying to pile on miles to doing rides that I enjoy and that are HI efforts. I'm liking it a lot more.

My best month was May '16: 842 miles. Rode 29/31 days, including a couple multi-race crit days and near-century training ride. Good month.

OTOH, I just did a PB on my 6.4 mi. TT. Only about 200 ft. of elevation in this run but today I did 18.4 mph. I'm thinking that's not too bad for age 71.

I've been using ~400 hours/year training plans, which includes all exercise - riding, skiing, hiking, weights, etc. I keep track of everything because it all matters in terms of training stress. This year, I'm at about a 480 hour pace for the year. I could probably handle a little more, but to very little point. I'm having fun. My wife and I are doing more backpacking and weights than riding in August/September this year. Legs should be good when we start bike training for next summer, in mid-October.

Last year I biked almost 10,000 miles. June, July, and August alone I rode everyday, averaging almost 41 miles per day and 3752 miles for those 3 months . It became a chore, and not fun. This year I decided that I would ride 500 miles per month and that's it. My fitness does not seem to have suffered, or my endurance. I enjoy my rides and can even take a few days off. Actually have time for my old favorite..weightlifting. What about you? How much is to much and how much is to little? Dipping below 500 would be to little, while 800 gets to be a bit much.
Overall, I'd rather run a few times a week, hit the gym for injury prevention strengthening and work on my flexibility than cycle 1000 miles a week.

For the past ~10 years I've cycled between 5,000 and 8,500 miles per calendar year. 5,000 seems like the bare minimum in order for me to maintain my sanity; any less than that and I would go stir crazy. 8,500 required a conscious effort to "get in a few extra miles" every week, which started to feel like a chore some days.
At no point did my fitness seem to suffer nor improve noticeably regardless of how many miles I rode...because regardless of whether I'm riding 100 or 200 miles per week, I'm always taking rest/recovery days when appropriate* and I'm also not specifically cycling in order to promote fitness, that's just a fortunate by-product of an activity I do for fun.
*(Which is why I'll probably never ride close to 10,000 miles/year until I'm retired.)

That's about where I'm at....I have an unofficial goal of 400/month.
I'd like to double that..35miles/day with a day off. Maybe some longer rides, extra day off here and there. Any more than that and I don't think I would really enjoy it. Sadly...time constraints sort of limit me to 100mi/wk right now, short of getting up an hour or two before the rest of my family and getting out for rides...something I'm seriously considering.
