Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I normally shoot for 5k miles per year. This year though, I took up mountain biking. 25 mountain miles is like 60 rioad miles here in So Cal. I'm now shooting for 3k for the year. Ironically, I will priobably have more saddle time than last year.

Not married, no kids, no television, live in NYC. I probably should have done something more purposeful like restart playing the piano instead of buying all this bike stuff but cycling keeps me occupied in my leisure time.

All my friends that race do not ride miles, they ride hours/intensity. The really serious ones have a very structured training schedule. Some of them hardly seem to be on the road except for races.

I think trying to be competitive would burn me out--take the fun out of cycling realizing that I will end up something like pack fodder in the Cat 1/2/3 race.

I've got a buddy that commutes by bike 50 miles/day. According to a poll sometime back that I can't find, about 5% of the commuters here do 20 miles or more each way. No one does that unless they really like it.

I do 5-8hrs/wk. on the bike (~95-150mi.), normally around 6hrs and 120ish miles a week though, not counting just riding to get around. But I also do weightlifting 4 times a week (around 6-8hrs total).

I set a goal of 250 miles/month. I regularly do 100-150 more than that but for me that's a pretty good balance.
I'm trying to balance being a newlywed, my first season of racing (leaving enough energy for the actual race), work, and the rest of my life so I'm doing closer to 250 side.

I usually put in about 5-6 hours a week. I'd like to do more than that but that will take riding before and after work a few days a week.

Commuting gets me 100mi/week when I can do it every day. 500-600mi/month would be about the optimal fun level for me I think. I'm falling way short of that now, but kids, a wife in school, work, a small side business, and life in general keeps me pretty busy.

This year I decided that I would ride 500 miles per month and that's it. My fitness does not seem to have suffered, or my endurance. I enjoy my rides and can even take a few days off. That's amazing, just as many miles as a professional cyclist. 10000 miles sounds like a single guy, no kids and the endurance, and recovery of superman haha. Monday I do 2 hours with the indoor trainer riding a 1984 continental that weights about the same as a Sherman tank, and just as durable, and according to the computer that's about 25 miles. Tuesday nothing since I gotta do the "family thing". Wednesday 25 miles on and off road with my mountain bike, Thursday indoor trainer 25 miles. Friday family again, Saturday 50 miles on a flat trail using my 1984 trek 560 Reynold's frame. Sunday nothing.

There was a guy who had the record for RAAM some years back. A pro cyclist broke his record handily, and the guy changed his method of training and returned to set the record again I believe. He cut way back on miles and blasted up the intensity even racing some crits. Depends on your goals.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Unless you're a professional athlete with obligations, or an amateur racer who feels he needs to train, whatever miles you enjoy riding is the right amount.

Any miles that feel like a chore are that many miles too many.

I'm happy around 150-250 miles a week during the warmer months (includes commuting and cruising around town as well as road cycling). More than that and it's time to pay more attention to nutrition, hydration, etc. than I really feel like doing. To keep from getting bored, I like to mix in a few short/fast rides with longer (75+ mile) rides, and ride both solo and with groups/partners. In the winter, mileage and time go way down, though I'll still do a few weekly rides of over an hour outdoors in the cold and snow and continue to commute.

I'm also not a racer, nor do I aspire to become a road racer. Cycling is my main hobby and exercise - I always get hurt running, don't care for gyms, and dislike water (because I'm a cat, remember.)

I do mainly bike commuting. So far no racing, although I've considered some TTs, but the competition is FAST.

My rides vary, but a typical RT day is about 30 to 35 miles, and sometimes as high as 50 miles. But, maybe only 4 days a week or so during the summer.

I find the Strava 800 miles per month distance challenges to be challenging, but not to bad for busy months, perhaps adding a couple of century rides.

This month I banged up my knee, and had a bit of a slow month, and am hitting just over 500 miles.

I'll occasionally hit 400 to 500 mile weeks. Those are hard weeks, but I don't think I'd really want to do that every week.

It looks like I got just under 6000 miles last year. I had a bit of a slow spring, but am on target for just over 6000 miles this year, I think.

Some people only read the thread title and reply, some people read the first post then reply, some people actually read the replies before replying and some people check the date to make sure they're not going to answer a question that was asked 6 years ago. Which type are you?

I'm the type that finds posts that ask questions about personal preference stay relevant year after year.

It's always tragic/amusing when people answer posts asking for help years later, though.

I just tried doing some combination of cycling monthly mileage. Didn't get this thread until I used 500.

In case it's still relevant I regularly do 200+ km per week, which works out to about 500 miles per month, but most of these are commuting miles, except for July and August.

Seriously. So many of the zombie thread resurrections are by a first time poster. I've tried to think of clever, ulterior motives, but none come to mind. But why would a first time poster go back six years and choose this thread to respond to?

They don't go back ... evidently, somehow it comes up in their Google searches. Or so a few have said.

Some I get, if they're looking for trainers or something, they could easily come up with an old post. I just typed bicycle rollers vs trainers and toward the end of the first page that comes up is a post on Bikeforums from 2009.

But I'm puzzled about this one.

I like to think they're somehow still with us... or at least still riding somewhere.

Plus it's nice to see new user participation, zombie thread or not.
