Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

chain riding on ring tips

My chain was real noisy, I found that I've been riding with a loose large chainring for a while. Tightened it up, less noisy, but no matter how I adjust the derailleur, it shifts the chain up onto the tips of the teeth, to the outside, so it falls off. Rode this bike hundreds of miles before with no problems.

You need to adjust the upper limit screw on your front derailleur, it should be labelled.

Yes, turn the high limit screw (usually outer screw) clockwise about 1/4 - 1/2 a turn to limit how far the derailluer moves. If it still over shifts, try another 1/4 turn.

+1 on the limit screw. When you tightened up the chainring, you likely moved it in a bit.

tried that. within less than a quarter turn it either rides tips or doesn't reach the ring. As soon as it grabs the ring, it rides up, the inner rail of the cage isn't touching the chain. It's like the ring itself is pulling the chain up. The rings are straight.

3 of the 5 bolts were loose, but not finger tightening loose.

Checked the chain lentgh, it's fine.

It acts like it needs spacers, but the bike didn't come with them and was fine for a few hundred miles.

just moved the FD down as far as I could until the tail hit the chainstay, it was high. The chain still rides up some, but it keeps the chain on the ring (at least on the stand). Gonna go see what happens on the ride home.

met up with my wife for the ride, so I looked at her bike (same FD). Noticed my rails looked a little bowed in comparison, so squeezed them in a bit with pliers. Between that, moving the FD down, a complete reset of all the adjustments, it works fine now. All I can figure why it was fine for months and suddenly got awful was the loose ring and a couple chain jumps may have bent the rails, or twisted the FD a bit. I probably should look into an upgrade. Still bit noisy, so it's back to the B screw on the RD, but it's way quieter than it was. Thanks for the tips!
