Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brother hit by car...

Just a reminder as to how vulnerable we are out on our bikes. Don't yet have all the details but my brother was riding Sat in the Phx area and was hit by a car (hit and run). I guess he's ok but suffered a broken pelvis and a lot of road rash not to mention his $7k tri bike destroyed.

Hope he is ok. My brother also rides and races. Definetely wouldn't want to hear that news, or vice versa I'm sure.

That's terrible. My uncle's wife was hit by a car while on a bike once. Destroyed her bike and put her in the hospital for weeks.

Luckily, the driver was a responsible person, and got out to help her (it was an accident).

These hit and run drivers need to be castrated (seems they are usually guys), have their license revoked for life, and their car sold at auction with the money going to the victim. They can then spend the rest of their life commuting on a bike.

I agree ... it may sound a bit harsh ... but I agree.

sorry about your brother hope he heals soon

hit and run drivers are common, i don't think it matters what or who they hit

an invalid DL doesn't keep someone from driving

That's why their car should be sold as well. At least that's a pretty big hit and they may think twice if they manage to get another one. They should do this to drunk drivers too. Can't run someone over if you don't have a car. Add them to a database as well of people banned from buying so when they try they are turned away or if they buy from a private party they will just lose it when they register it, and so on. Where this a will there is a way. ffin politicians.

best wishes for your brother. broken pelvis doesn't fit my definition of "okay" but it's all relative I suppose...

Interesting point... not to go too far OT but you have to have a background check for a firearm and I dare say that cars are more dangerous & kill more people... food for thought...

This won't stop them from borrowing, stealing, or buying from private citizens.

Most people hit and run because they don't have valid insurance, registration, DL, and or warrants.

I don't know what effect harsher penalites would have on hit and runs, would it make them more or less likely?

I don't meant to threadjack, it's a frustrating situation, all I'm saying is I don't think cyclists are singled out. I think no matter what they hit that person would flee or attempt it. Responsibility starts at home with the parents.

OP, again I hope your brother heals well.

Ugh. Sorry about your brother.

Just found out my riding partner's dad was hit by a car riding his bike and killed.

Guaranteed +10 years to any hit and run sentence ..., that judges have to enforce, would certainly reduce them.

Make hit and run a multiplier of sentences. If it was a 1-year offense and you ran, it becomes 10 years. Although I'm not sure if that can be done legally.

I think the thing he's probably most pissed about besides his bike is that he will have to pull out of the races he was training for...a marathon next month and an ironman triathlon in Oct.

Geez finally got close to a first hand account today from his wife.....only thing broken besides his bike was his helmet NOT his pelvis...lol. Oh yeah the hit and run driver's wind shield is shattered from my bro hitting it at approx 50mph (est drivers speed).

I'm glad to hear your brother survived the hit unscathed.

Once again a camera would be nice. Each time I hear of a hit and run or someone getting buzzed I think what if there was an image of the vehicle...

An inexpensive "surveillance camera" facing the rear of the bike would be nice.

He will probably be covered by his own car insurance, as long as he has uninsured motorist protection. I'd file a claim and at least see where it goes.
