This thread is the exact opposite of what I expected from the subject "budget rebuild thread." Some quality stuff in here

Update, finally! I spent July in Europe, but am back with a much updated bike. The November RFSC 38 SOB's came two days after I arrived back in the country. Had the SRAM Red crank before I left, but didn't get it put on until this weekend. At the bike shop it weighed in at 15.14 with pedals, computer, etc. I'm pretty happy with this figure though dropping the 64 grams to get it under 15 wouldn't hurt.
I really like how the red / black theme is consistent throughout the bike - seat, bars, seatpost, hubs, frame.
Let me know what you think!
*Edit - current net cost is $1145 including labor!

For crying out loud, enjoy it as is and ride it. The build looks good. Ultegra cranks are quite heavy. I was surprised that my vintage Sugino and Campy cranks all weighed less than the Ultegra even with a steel bottom bracket.
If you really want to make the bike light then get yourself some sew up wheels and visit granny if she's still alive, she'd be happy to stitch the tire casing back together for ya.

Took them out on the inaugural ride this morning. They felt very stiff, got up to speed very quickly (should be at 400g lighter). I was most impressed with the braking - it felt nearly as good as on aluminum wheels.

Picked up some brand new Red shifters today ($375 shipped), and I need to get a rear derailleur.
Reading up on the subject makes it seem like the difference between Force and Rival is 12g and $50, so I was planning to get the Rival ($55 shipped with Amazon Prime).
Anyone have thoughts or want to persuade me towards another option?
Oh - and weight with the Red Shifters and Force RD should be 14.82lbs

Here's the latest with the SRAM Red Shifters, Rival Rear Derailleur and KMC X10SL Chain. 14.80lbs as is with cages, pedals, computer. Just ordered Dura-Ace carbon fiber pedals to replace the Ultegras. It should only take off 67 grams, but I got them for $145, which I'm very happy with.

I think it looks perfect except for the white hood covers. They just look out of place compared to the rest of the bike. I'd swap them out for standard black ones, but that's just me.

Curious how tall you are and what is your inseam? Is that a 57cm c-t-c XL?
I ride a Look 555 in that size.
Nice build...hard to fault Look frames.

I see. Kind of explains why you ride without a setback post. I am just over 6' with 35 inch inseam and ride a bit farther back. Long arms match my long legs and probably have about a 5'10" torso.
Nice bike and enjoy it. The weight weenie thing has never been my thing and I am a tech head. I prefer different parts for different reasons...function and aesthetics...cost is in there. Weight matters but most of the higher end stuff I like is pretty light.
Have fun.
