It will come off by itself once you are fast enough.

Where do you even buy a bike with such a thing on it?

Elvo 06-10-11 12:15 PM

Is your dork disk made of carbon fiber, dimpled, and has a torroidal profile? If so, I'll buy it off you.

I just use clippers. Removing the cassette just robs you of the opportunity to destroy the disk in the process. Unless you remove it and THEN destroy it, just out of spite. But that might be a bit weird, even around here.

I paint mine black.

Isn't it against BF rules to post a close-up of any componentry below Ultegra?

It is a standard component if you are to buy a complete bicycle from a retailer here in the USA. Litigation and liability issues.
What standard (safety oriented) components come on a bike sold in Belgium?

Spookeay Bird 06-10-11 01:09 PM

Darn it! I can't get mine to burn off.
I've decided to throw the bike on the bond fire tonight at the lake. I'll get some photos.

I think dork disks were much more common before indexed shifting. In the old days, you could push the lever too far and the chain could come off the cassette and into the spokes. I don't see the need anymore. Maybe if someone's rear dr isn't adjusted correctly but I have never had a need for a dork disk since I bought my bike five years ago.

Do I at least get SOME credit for putting the ball on the tee?

Cannondale had to do a recall on some of their high-end bikes because they were shipping them without the dork disk. I'm sure that was more than one day of eye-rolling for the folks at C-dale. My guess is that shop owners asked them to do it because they didn't want to have to take them off.

Before you get kudos around here, especially with your minimal post count, you're going to need at least a multi-page thread on the subject of waving, or a rant against pricey bikes and their undeserving owners.

KiddSisko 06-10-11 01:51 PM

When I bought my Blue RC8 a few years ago, it came without a dork disc. Perhaps the shop removed it knowing the buyer would demand it be removed?

Ah, multi page threads about dork disks don't cut it around here? Sorry. I'm new.

I assume there's a story behind the waving thread comment?

That's Fred right there.

Having recently gone bike shopping I didn't notice anything that stood out in my mind. You don't need reflectors, no dork disc etc. I am not sure as to the requirements of having a headlight/taillight, I know they are very common on commuter bikes, but there are a fair amount of roadies here and they are not on them, whether or not anyone is breaking the law I don't know. A bike bell is pretty much a necessity as there are bike paths everywhere (and I do mean EVERYWHERE) and they aren't exactly 8 bikes wide.

Police in Belgium aren't like the police in the states, there aren't typically cops sitting randomly to ticket people, that's what speed cameras everywhere are for. Cops here are here for things like setting up DUI check points and actual emergencies and not seen as a revenue source by issuing tickets. Last time I checked however, Belgium doesn't exactly have a working government

Go ahead...try and start a thread that goes something like "Should I Wave To Other Roadies That I Meet On The Road" or some such insanity...go ahead...

Takes much more than one thread before the kudos start rolling in. Could just be beginners luck.

Ask umd about the waving.

Oh I forgot, you can't ask him, because he was banned.

I have a mountain bike where the thing got yellow, old and cracked off. Frankly, there is a part of me that wants it back on given the number of things that can happen to the RD on a mountain bike. Maybe one of you guys can send me one of yours? (Now my road bikes, on the other hand, none of them came with them.)

Well, I'd rather not get banned. I just searched "waving" and I found a pantload of threads that were quite boring. I'll assume that's the problem.

I try searching before I start threads. I'm new here... not to the interwebs.

Dork discs standard on road bikes? Like wut?
Not overhere they ain't!
We have those things on children's bikes and maybe women's townbikes or so.
I wouldn't know ... haven't ever bought a complete bike in a shop.

Canada is less litigious than the US, but we have dork disks too, even on high end bikes. And.....wheel reflectors on the spokes! :D

AdelaaR 06-10-11 02:24 PM

Wheel reflectors? AAARGGHHH the agony! ;)

And it goes nice with the black cable and contrasting yellow paint. I bet he has a matching yellow/black helmet too

AdelaaR 06-10-11 02:25 PM

The question is: are those dork discs more aero than without? ^^
And more importantly: where is the windtunnel testing data?!

If I were a moderator I'd tripleban you right now for even mentioning it.
