Hardened BF member Vireo often rides a bike festooned with wheel reflectors and reflecting tape strips, lights and mirrors. One doesn't dare question his judgment, character, manhood or Fred status. I think he's the only one though. Everyone else is suspect.

And it goes nice with the black cable and contrasting yellow paint. I bet he has a matching yellow/black helmet too

Reflectors are the summum of unaeroness and they should be on commuter bikes only ... there's a special forum for ghastly stuff like that. |

Or just mount a strobe off a radio tower to your helmet. You'll be OK then.

I've got those. I'm just wondering what the downside is to having the reflectors. (Just dorky looking?) I'm thinking they provide additional visibility. FYI - Sincere question. Not being a dick.
Even the tought of me on my TT-bike with reflectors makes me sick. |

Before you get kudos around here, especially with your minimal post count, you're going to need at least a multi-page thread on the subject of waving, or a rant against pricey bikes and their undeserving owners.

I don't have reflectors on my road bike or my Sirrus because those aren't ridden at night. The other utility-type bikes have them because they are ridden for practical purposes as well as recreation. That means night riding. I removed the front white reflector from a few of them though. Only the trikes still have that one. I also replaced the rear red reflector on a couple bikes with a Cateye Reflex taillight that has a built-in reflector.

Combine them into one thread, like this: Why don't those poseurs on their fancy BMC carbon bikes ever wave to me? I'm on my way to work, and they never wave back.
Something like that? |

OK, thanks. Our posts crossed so I didn't see your response. I wondered if that was the reason, but it didn't seem like they'd make much difference. I'll pull them off. I use the little flea lights & they're pretty bright.

I dont get the kickstand and bell joke. My bikes have kickstands and bells.
|
My bike has two kickstands for added safety.

Oh, heck yea sbxx. LOL Where do you keep that second one?
|
I've got a dork disk on my front wheel too.

If it's the plastic type, the easiest way is to just burn it off. Everything near it is metal, so it's ok.

I'll admit that my post was a bit sarcastic, but it sounds like you might not be to the place where you want to go without the disk just yet.
If you don't know how to properly adjust an RD, you probably also can't tell if it isn't adjusted correctly. An RD in the spokes could really mess you up. |

This sort of elitist attitude is exactly what this forum needs less of. Don't forget you were a noob once as well. You basically did not contribute or propel the discussion in any way, so why don't you just not say anything at all? You may sound like less of an ass if you did that.
You called names. |

If your wheel reflectors are really improving your visibility to drivers, it's a sign that you aren't dressed or lit up properly. Reflective gear is essential to riding safely at night. Wheel reflectors are not. Some races run on public roads require the reflectors which is why some riders use them. I ride on two lane roads in winter storms in the dark all the time and wouldn't consider using them. Numerous road reports indicate I am highly visible. |

Hey Spookeay!
I was just looking at the pic and tagline in your sig. Are you sure you didn't accidentally include a picture of the perp rather than the detective? Unless my eyes deceive me, I'm seeing street shoes, oversized seat bag and pump, valve caps, neither pedals nor wheels are in optimum position for photographing (pedals should be in 3 and 9 o'clock positions, wheels should have stems at bottom or hidden), insulated water bottle, and spacers above the stem. Also, cassette looks huge. I couldn't tell if you have low gears for climbing or if the dork disk may still be there ;) |

Taking the dork disk off is one of the first things I do after buying a bike. I do it properly by removing the cassette first.
