No offense but can you guys read? The first post specifically says OTHER THAN PEDALS. I only post this because like 4 people have said pedals so far.

"First thing was to remove the dork disk."

I've been a faithful reader and often contributor to this site. And based upon some of the threads that I've read on bicycle maintenance and the nature of the questions and responses, I think the last thing to do is remove the "dork" disc. In fact for most people on this site the spoke protector ought to be manditory until they can demonstrate some minimum mechanical skills and an understanding of how their bicycle works.

I would assume one would have mechanical skills or a mechanic at the LBS in order to perform the work involved with some of these upgrades, unless you consider a BB and crank upgrade something an average Joe off the street could do.

Quote: What do better wheels do to help you in cycling?
Along with the lighter and stronger advantages that Grasschopper mentioned, what is equally as important is smooth rolling hubs for lower rolling resistance. A simple way to get a feel for this is grab cheap wheel at the axel and spin it. You'll almost certainly feel the grrrrrr of the hub bearings. Then grab a wheel with precision sealed bearing hubs, even like Mavic Cosmos which is actually a lower end wheel upgrade, spin it, and you'll fell nothing but silky smoothness. That will translate to less energy needed to spin the wheels as well as a smoother ride.

No offense taken Grasschopper. But he did say, "Other than the pedals if the bike didn't come with them." Mine did come with them (inexpensive SPDs) so it was an upgrade.

Wasn't really anything to upgrade, though I did get a 12-27 cassette to replace the 12-23.

wheels.

I'm a heavy rider, so in most cases the wheels gotta go so I can throw something a bit tougher on there.

Saddle!

My bike came with Ksyrium Elite wheels so there was no need to change them. It seems "most" bikes come with saddles that are just "OK". I think the saddle is all personal preference so I won't bother suggesting a specific one but check out the models from Fizik and Selle San Marco.
