Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You must be one of those who haven't ridden a good set of wheels or you wouldn't talk such crap.

Sure
Remember the video of Jens voigt on a new racebike being out accelerated by a 99 year old bike?
People fooling themselves almost never actually know consciously that they are doing so ... you, for instance, are a fine example of this.

So I take it you've never ridden a high end set of wheels.

Your telling me you won't be able to tell the difference between a pair of boat anchor 1900gr Aksiums vs a pair of 1100gr 303's? Then I guess you also think that the weight of the bike makes no difference either.

Come on, now. No point getting all emotional about light wheels until you get to 900g for the pair.

Amateurs buying them for "race days" wheels are silly, they'll still be beating by someone with more wattage on box rims. Riding them everyday is where it's at.

That's what the heavy bomb-proof wheels are for. It lowers the cost of wheel damage sustained while training, and it (very importantly) maximizes the placebo effect of the sexy carbon wheels on race day.

Whatever the difference is, it's always going to be a LOT less than most people want to believe.
Especially for normal riding that is not pro racing ... any wheelset above $300 is completely wasted.

Sure ... you could give a $1000 five star 7 course meal to a starving little boy in South Sudan ... but I'm pretty sure he'd be equally fed with a normal healthy $10 meal and he'd be pleased for much longer for the same money spent.

If people want to spend ludicrous amounts on things it is their good right, but they should admit that they just want it for the bling and not for the added benefit.

Incorrect. You like nice things. You go goo-goo-ga-ga when products have "Zipp" and "Cervelo" on them.

Yes. I'm so goo-goo-ga-ga that 99% of my riding is on my beat up old Reynolds Solitudes and a pair of Ksyriums, and my latest road frame purchase was a Lynskey.
