Best road bike for my budget
I'm looking to spend around $1000 on my first real road bike. I commute to work but I'd also like to start doing longer rides. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

$1000 total or just the bike. If just the bike, plan to add another 50% for pedals, shoes, clothes (raingear ain't cheap), helmet, gloves, cages, bottles.....welcome to the sport.

It must be summer.
There are about five or six of these posts in the past seven days alone.

$1000 on bike initially, everything else will come in time. The only other thing I'm buying in addition is a Brooks saddle.
Thanks for the suggestions X-Linked.
I actually ride year round, but have moved from totally flat Sacramento where I rode fixed, to mountainous upstate NY, but thanks for being condescending.

With that kind of budget you can score a great 3 to 4 year old fairly high end bike like:
Trek Madone
Cannondale CAAD
Specialized Tarmac or Roubaix (possibly an older S works too)
Cervelo Soloist
Go test ride some newer versions to get a feel for what size and type of ride you prefer - carbon versus aluminum etc and then go hunting in the used market on CL and via the local bike groups/clubs.

You also might want to look at the Giant Defy 2. Not that it makes a big difference, but Bicycling Magazine has named it best entry level road bike 3 years in a row. That should hold some weight. They sell at around $1,100.00 (pedals included). However, if you know that you are going to stick with road bikes, save your money and when you can, get a higher end bike. I've gone through three bikes in the last two years and it is really getting expensive. At my age, I think I am going to stop at this one for a while.

I'd look at used also. Lots of great deals at your price range from folks who bought new and just didnt' get into the sport. I landed two really nice used bikes last year for well under what you are looking to spend. One was a LeMond Zurich with a full Integra setup that is really comfortable and pretty much just as fast as my 10x more expensive CF Trek Madone.

The choices are many. You can narrow it down by finding out what is available in your local bike shop. We can suggest almost anything but if it is not available at your local area, it would be pointless. Do you have an Orbea dealer in your area or perhaps BH? If you are going to buy through the interwebz, then you will be open up for more choices (with a drawback being proper fit and assembly).
