When are you all taking your resting heart rate - from what I read Sally Edwards Heart Rate Book Guru says she wears her monitor to sleep and when she wakes up, with out moving she checks the monitor - I don't think I would like to wear my monitor to sleep. The best I have done is rolled over and put a finger on my wrist as I watch the alarm clock - that gets me 46 if I am healthy and feeling well. If I am laying on the couch and have not exercised in the last few hours I can get 54 - no lower.

February my resting hr was 58 - as taken by the doc. I was scared *****less though because my wife hadn't told me that the physical involved needles. And I really don't like needles! I'm hoping that after the summer season, my hr is now in the low 50s. No idea what my max is. Don't own a hr monitor.

Just for comparison - Field Mouse: Heart rate: 325 - 780 beats/minute . If I remember correctly one species of mouse can handle 1200 beats a minute for short durations *can you freaking imagine???* – it is the most extreme range of any mammal. Elephants are about 30. And Hummingbirds are about 250 times per minute while at rest, about 1,220 per minute while flying

the formula i've heard for max hr is 205 - your age/2.
this is almost right for me. i'm 28 and this summer, my max was 193, resting around 43. i think my anaerobic threshold is somewhere around 158, or 82%, now, but i'm not sure on that.
i agressively trained this year and my resting hr dropped slightly from about 45 last year. i never used a hrm until recently, but i wish i knew what my numbers were about 6 or 7 years ago when i was riding 400+ miles in a good week, 10k a year, and racing my little butt off.
i don't know much about this stuff, but this will be the first year in a few that i'm training in the offseason and putting in regular, measured miles on the trainer, while paying attention to hr. next year's numbers will be interesting.
interestingly (but not really surprisingly), a former pro i ride with now and then told me that he used to ride 20,000 miles a year and now rides about 4000. his miles then were just distance riding with intervals. his miles now are carefully based around heartrate numbers.
by working out in his target HR range, he sees benefits equal to 20k of aimless riding in 1/5th of the miles than.

And it freaks my pudgy doctor out! He wanted to halt my stress test just as I was getting warmed up.

According to the last EKG I had a resting of 60. I just got back in the saddle and haven't been out for more than 30 minutes at a shot. My aim is about 20 (even if I got to go into a coma to get there) I aim to do it.
