Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd look for another doctor. You may be having Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs). These are *usually* benign and probably why the doctor wasn't concerned. Everybody has them occaisionally, but 1 in 4 is quite a lot. I think I would find a cardiologist who will verify what is really happening and make sure it's not a real problem.

When are you all taking your resting heart rate - from what I read Sally Edwards Heart Rate Book Guru says she wears her monitor to sleep and when she wakes up, with out moving she checks the monitor - I don't think I would like to wear my monitor to sleep. The best I have done is rolled over and put a finger on my wrist as I watch the alarm clock - that gets me 46 if I am healthy and feeling well. If I am laying on the couch and have not exercised in the last few hours I can get 54 - no lower.

Peace All - Happy weekend riding

February my resting hr was 58 - as taken by the doc. I was scared *****less though because my wife hadn't told me that the physical involved needles. And I really don't like needles! I'm hoping that after the summer season, my hr is now in the low 50s. No idea what my max is. Don't own a hr monitor.

Just for comparison - Field Mouse: Heart rate: 325 - 780 beats/minute . If I remember correctly one species of mouse can handle 1200 beats a minute for short durations *can you freaking imagine???* – it is the most extreme range of any mammal. Elephants are about 30. And Hummingbirds are about 250 times per minute while at rest, about 1,220 per minute while flying

If the vitamens don't keep it under control I will go further. I sweat a lot of white stuff. 80 degree day, 60 mile ride and I will have white stuff on the outside of bike shorts. I believe most of it is salt. After most rides I need to take table salt to either stop or ward off cramps. I know it is the salt because taking the salt will stop the cramps in less than one minute and they don't come back. I do drink at least one large bottle per hour. I think some of the rest of the white stuff I sweat may be what is needed for heart rate regulation, maybe calcium or potasium. I take both plus E, A, C, zinc, niacin, B complex etc.... in amounts greater than a multi but less than mega doses.

Max heart rate is insignificant and no indicator of health or performance. Resting heart rate is directly related to fitness and is very significant.
It's also related to genetics. When I was a kid (around 9 or 10), my pediatrician was blown away by my resting heart rate and had me run in place a few minutes and remeasured. I guess he was satisfied that I was okay then told me I had an "athlete's heart." I just did normal kid activities so I was obviously born that way. The doc must have had a subliminal influence on me because I proceeded to become involved in sports of all kinds, including marathon running and long distance triathlons as an adult. Unfortunately, my body type is really not made for long distance stuff, but I like it nevertheless for the cardiovascular benefits.

the formula i've heard for max hr is 205 - your age/2.

this is almost right for me. i'm 28 and this summer, my max was 193, resting around 43. i think my anaerobic threshold is somewhere around 158, or 82%, now, but i'm not sure on that.

i agressively trained this year and my resting hr dropped slightly from about 45 last year. i never used a hrm until recently, but i wish i knew what my numbers were about 6 or 7 years ago when i was riding 400+ miles in a good week, 10k a year, and racing my little butt off.

i don't know much about this stuff, but this will be the first year in a few that i'm training in the offseason and putting in regular, measured miles on the trainer, while paying attention to hr. next year's numbers will be interesting.

interestingly (but not really surprisingly), a former pro i ride with now and then told me that he used to ride 20,000 miles a year and now rides about 4000. his miles then were just distance riding with intervals. his miles now are carefully based around heartrate numbers.

by working out in his target HR range, he sees benefits equal to 20k of aimless riding in 1/5th of the miles than.

According to the last EKG I had a resting of 60. I just got back in the saddle and haven't been out for more than 30 minutes at a shot. My aim is about 20 (even if I got to go into a coma to get there) I aim to do it.
