Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

these new $10K bikes.....are we crazy???

So I was excited to sit down and read my new roadbike action mag....they reviewed 2 super high end bikes the New Specialized & the New Scott both go for close to $10K....I luv new fun shiny things like most cyclist. However, is there a need for these uberbikes in the world today. I for the life of me cannot imagine it being so fantastic tha tmy $3K carbon bike is three times less of a bike.
Would I want one...INDEED but is it becoming silly??

Of course. I don't think anyone is going to say its 3x the bike. The diminishing returns on higher end bikes is steep, but thats not really the point. Bling factor is worth a lot of money to some people. Just like high end sports cars, its never necessary but personally I love having something to salivate over that I will never be able to justify spending my money on

Maybe. But it's not limited to cyclists. Does a $20,000, $30,000, $40,000 Harley make any sense? (No.)

I think its beyond silly. But I also think your $3000 bike is silly. I'll continue to seek out and ride hand built, double butted steel framed, Campagnolo equipped bikes from the 60's and 70's. I limit my spending to less than $400 for these bikes. The best riding bikes ever built in my opinion.

Lots of people here own bikes close to that amount, say $7000+. Just about any new bike with Red or DA and and Zipp wheels cost that much. Or a bike with Di2. Cycling is something we enjoy so if the income is there, why not buy it? As FlashBazbo says, it's not limited to cyclists.

You can have one of those super bikes for about half price after they become a year old, if you know what to do that is.

This is one of my favorites:

https://www.bianchiusa.com/archives/2...-super-record/

But $12k? That's laughable.

I can buy the frameset alone for only $2200, Campy SR for $1900 on eBay, high end wheels of my choice, and the cockpit parts for just a few hundred bucks. It would come out to roughly half of the MSRP.

I did just that with my Look 595. I definitely didn't pay $4k for just the frameset. My entire bike w/ SRAM Red and DA c24 wheels (normally well over $1k, but I didn't pay that) was a little under $5k. Everything was brand new. It should have cost me at least $8k based on the MSRP of everything. My point is that if you don't rush out and buy these super bikes the second they are released to the public, you will save thousands of dollars.

The have-nots will continue to rag on the haves - they justify their own possessions as rational choices, the haves as frivolous. The gap will continue to widen, so goes the cycle of life.

I'm was looking at the Wilier Cento Uno, but now I'm drooling over the Zero Seven. I look at it like this: it's cheaper than a Hyundai.

Why buy that when you could get the EMX-7 for $22,000? https://www.bikerumor.com/2011/06/02/...ing-road-bike/

I just purchased a $3500 road bike and got razed by a couple of friends who thought it was foolish to spend that amount of money on a bicycle. Then I reminded one he dropped $6500 on a vacation to Vegas which other than memories is all he has to show for it.....and the other put 4k in a perfectly running brand new truck. Value is in the eyes of the beholder. If you have that type of disposable income and it motivates you to ride...get that 10k bike. To the poster above, if $400 bike gets you out riding outstanding...I can tell u that my new roubaix has me at work itching for the workday to end so I can take it out. I would not buy a $10k bike at this time in my life as it would be to large of an investment for my budgeted budgeted income...but if I won the lottery or my investments started seeing far better returns...in all honestly I would probably be all over it...I like biking and some of those bikes are super sweet.

while I understand the intent of this post, I must note that in most areas of the country, motorcycles are a luxury and rarely able to justify from a financial standpoint... much like having a boat or a snowmobile or a jet ski... and, in harley's defense, a new Honda GoldWing is $27k (by comparison, the HD Touring Ultra is $22k), so its not exactly like they are priced well beyond their market segment either...

now, if you were talking about a $100k custom chopper I think your point would make more sense...

Sure its extravagant and unnecessary, just like pretty much everything we spend money on. How many people are buying the cheapest, base-model economy car? As long as you are spending within your means, buy what you like. Personally I enjoy more classic styled bikes, so the $10k carbon wonderbike isnt much of a temptation. My upgrade path would look more like this...

If I was fortunate enough to make the kind of money that afforded me toys at that level, absolutely. I would buy more than one. There is a guy around here that has an endless supply of money and buys bikes high end bikes on a seasonal basis or for special trips he makes. If ya got flaunt it. If ya don't envy it.

If I said how much boating cost me a month or yearly, everyone here would say I'm crazy. But people at my marina thinks my bicycle is crazy. It's all relative to what you like

Threads like this hit me completely wrong. What kind of problem do you (as in the OP) have with successful people that can afford spend that kind of money on a bike? They earned the money, they can spend it on whatever they want. If one of those high end bikes makes 'em happen, then that's great.

If I could afford it, I'd be all over a super high end bike. And I bet you would be too. It seems to me you're just jealous of folks that have a lot more money than you. Get over it. Work harder/smarter and make more money. Then you can buy one too.

While I don't doubt those old warhorses are excellent-riding bikes (and phenomenal values!), have you ever ridden a modern $10,000 bike (or even a modern $3,000 bike), or is your comparision based purely on conjecture?
