I said it before, but it bears repeating.
Watch for PBK sales/coupons. When they have them, get a half dozen tires.
I would say a good price nowadays would be less than 40 bucks each, although a year ago you could get them for as low as 30 bucks each.

That would be a great price now. Wholesale prices on tires have gone up. Industry articles last winter predicted 20%+ price increases in tire wholesale prices this year due to raw material price increases.....that has come to be true. If you can find GP4000's for less than $40 - let me know and I might buy them for inventory myself and sell to local shops.....

Regarding buying in advance, the following advice applies to storing the tires:
- Unused tires must be protected from temperature extremes
- Away from damp areas, but very low humidity is also not good (such as near electric furnace in winter)
- Not exposed to direct sunlight
- Much more durable if not used at all; mold release compound protects the rubber

I am getting a new wheel set soon (its in the mail). I wanted to try my first set of conti4000's, but I am not sure I can swing over a hundred dollar price tag and I do not want to wait longer than I already have to ride my wheels/powertap.
What else is good and has a lower price tag?

Mold release? It's what is put into a mold before molding the tire compound with the tread. It helps make sure that the tire once molded will actually release from the mold instead of bonding to it's surface. Usual agents melt a bit in the mold during the molding process and coat/cover the entire molded surface of the product. With most high quality tires you will see the mold release on the tire when new. Pump it up and it almost looks like the tire has a waxy white coating on it that starts to flake off. That's the mold release.
As for it protecting the tire.....meh.

I read that bullet as: The tire is more durable if you don't use it at all.
Even re-reading it, that's the way I interpret it. What am I doing wrong?
I guess maybe he's saying "Don't use the tire and then store it."

Sorry for the confusion!
Yes, that's what I intended to say. If you can help it, don't use a tire before storing it for 3+ months. A totally new tire will store better than a tire you rode a few times, and a lot better than a tire with 1,000 miles.

Use "advanced search" for tires and you will find lots of other suggestions.

I have bought many things on EBay (including GP4000S) and have NEVER had a bad transaction. Can't say that for brick & mortar stores or company web sites. I think EBay sellers try harder to ship accurately and quickly because their reputation is always on the line. I only buy from high rated sellers with a lot of history, usually only do "buy it now", and I watch out for high shipping charges.

Reputable? I don't know. But I've ordered from them a number of times and always got what I ordered at a great price and once I got my order faster than a Performance order I made the same day.

As much as I hate to say it, Gregg's has them a good bit cheaper if you want to buy local.

On that note, how much difference is there between the black and the colored GPs? Do the ones with color in them just wear faster, or do they also not grip as well? I just got a new frame built up - it's black with red highlights, and I was thinking red tires would look pretty nifty.

^^^ no Black Chili in the colored ones. The Black Chili compound supposedly helps with grip in addition to better wear.

PB3 tires come with nice red accents. I think they're comparable to the GPs.
Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. My front tire is pretty worn, and if I get another flat before these arrive, I might head up to Green Lake.
