Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BF math - Help

Occasionally some memebers posted that they ride xx number of miles at an average speed 18-20 miles per hour. Reading that my mind went completely blank, the whole thing went straight over my head. So I dig back to whatever knowledge I learned from my basic education and still nothing came up. I even checked with my cyclocomputer and still it doesn't know either. All it can come up with is a singple number for an average. So can the experts on here help to educate me? In layman term please. If the math is too advance then perhaps all is lost. Thanks.

What is the question? How can average speed be between 18 and 20 mph? It can't, average speed = distance traveled / time so it's a unique number. Not sure that's what you're asking though.

I think they are defining a group of rides on the same route, giving a span of average speeds over those rides.

p.s.

but if you want the BF math to that equation, you multiply the final number by stem length and add a zero to the end, divide that by seat cost then subrtract the difference in weight of the Di2 from the difference of Sram red (yellow edition of course[color changes weight IRL])=BFavgspeed

edit: add 1mph avg for: new bar tape, carbon fiber anything, each grouppo up you advance, whoosh wheels, and post count

I think what people are saying is that one ride they'll average 18.5, then another day 19.5, another 18.1, another 19.9, for example. Then they are using their brain (not a cyclocomputer) to approximate that range as 18-20 mph.

I got the basic cyclocomputer and I simply take note of my start time and divide the distance I've ridden an hour (or two) elapsed and consider that my avg speed. As of late, my rides are becoming longer where my rides are of a minimum of 3 hours. But, my speed suffers immensely after 1.5 hours. It's all relative though. Do not let the #s fool you. For all you know, some individuals ride on pancake flat while you're on rolling hills.

I'm guessing they're talking typical speed rather than average.

Actually the average BF speed is 20-18mph.

Ride 1 mile to the bike shop. Spend 50 minutes harassing the staff. Ride 1 mile home.
2mph.
