Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crank replacement for CAAD10 BB30

Hey so I just had a 2011 Cannondale CAAD10 5 ordered for me. I was wondering if I should replace the crank? It comes with the FSA Gossamer and I keep hearing bad things about it. Also there was a recall...https://www.fullspeedahead.com/techne...-Recall-Notice. I haven't been able to inspect the crank since the bike isn't here yet so I'm not sure if Cannondale replaced it before shipping it to the dealer. I'm not sure if I should have just gone with the 10-4 which has the SRAM Force crank and lighter gruppo since I'll be spending money to replace the crank anyways.

Bikes: are fun! :-)

I would think you could get the dealer you're working with to cut you a better deal with a change out than just buying a separate crank outright.

Nah....my 2010 CAAD9 had that crank and I put somewhere around 8000 miles on that wihout a problem...and I'm a big dude. I wouldn't replace it until you have a problem with it.

Incidentally I believe I know the problems you are referencing and they're not epidemic by any means - similar to worrying about your Cervelo R3 frame cracking.....maybe, but probably not.

they shouldn't sell you one with a part under recall without either replacing it or implementing the fix for it. Definitely ask about that.

I would do it for the Force group alone but I prefer SRAM. Otherwise, I think the 4 and 5 are nearly identical as far as wheels and other components go. I say get a feel for which shifting you like more and pull the trigger. If you're upgrading the crank, you'll probably spend near $250-300 just to get a good BB30 crank anyway but if you don't like the double-tap, it's pointless going with the Force bike.

The fact that I hear all these bad things about that Gossamer crank and that there's a recall makes me kind of nervous...
Andrewluke, it's actually a rival group except the crank is a Force. Yeah the 10-4 would be about 3-400 dollars more. It's just the gruppo that's different, wheels and other stuff is the same.

I also keep hearing that "people have said bad things about it" - but have yet to hear exactly what the problems are supposed to be. (Besides the possible recall.)

Anyone..?

It's heavy and I think people say it's not very stiff... but I'm only going on posts I see around forums.
