Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

One I can do without a massive struggle. (TT bike, flat road, appropriate gear... not such a problem)
The other isn't something I'd even dream about.
That's a shade over 31mph. I can do that for a minute or two at a time. Hard to sustain that kind of speed for very long though.

RDG's point exactly.
10k/h is a magnitude of order. (I could figure this out in watts, but I don't care enough to do so atmo)

For many folks that I see on the road, 24mph (40k) is a very big deal.
For many racers that I see on the road, 31mph (50k) is a very big deal...

just gots to make sure we are speaking equally to differing baselines.

I'm only half paying attention to the posts in this pathetic thread. It's the typical Cervelo owners/lovers vs. the imbecilic Cervelo haters. These threads get so old. Plus I am working, trying to make a buck so I can buy another Cervelo.

I have no idea why they are popular. I will say, being an old guy who once thought he was "fast", the Cervelo RS has been a fantastic bike for me.

Take a look at the hour record (you have an hour, go as far as you can, run on a velodrome).

The UCI changed their rules in the 90s so you have to run a round-tube, no-aero frame (just like Eddy Merckx's track bike) The current UCI record is 49.7 km.

The record prior to that, set on an aero frame, was 56.375 km.

This shows that:

1. Average speeds in excess of 50 km/h are not just a big deal, they are world record big deals; and

2. That aero stuff really works.

Because the Cervelo guys are pretty smart. Everything else except for traditional steel (old and new) is a commodity frame.

Very interesting fact. Why would anyone use anything else other than an aero frame road bike becomes the question to ask. I know my S2 is faster than any other bike I own, because I ride them all, and know what the attributes of each of them. I can't believe the difference is that big. Doing 56.37km/hr for an hour is one hell of an effort. That's amazing.

Although yes, that speed is a reflection of the aero bikes used then, it is more of a reflection of the position those guys were in when making those records. Remember Boardman's superman position and Obree's position too!!

Hush yourself, Nancy.

Why do you care so much about what other people are riding and loving on? Every thread that mentions the word Cervelo, you jump in to say just how "ghey" they are. It's a freakin' bike!

I bet Trek's sales have gone down SIGNIFICANTLY, due to ( the cheaters-oh, sorry, I mean) Lance's retirement?

But everybody Lance competed against was doping. Does that make all the pro cyclists of that era 'cheaters'? Is cheating even possible if the rules aren't enforceable and all the participants violate them? Pro athletes who are confronted with the decision to dope or retire? Don't you think your hero Greg Lemond should kiss his handlebars and thank God he wasn't confronted with that awful choice when he raced in his prime in the 1980's?

By the way, I don't think Trek's sales are down by much, and if they are, it's due to the worst recession in 80 years more than anybody's retirement.

Im trying to figure out the correlation to Lemond? Greg couldve easily cheated, but chose not to, why? Maybe b/c he was that good of a rider, he didnt need to cheat to win. Guy almost died & couldve then, but didnt. Contador/Armstrong/Landis/Ullrich, ALL cheaters. Why? Probably because they qerent veRy good riders? If they were, what would be the need for them to cheat? Why? Many reasons.
