Distance and isolation has become our comfort zone. What good is community if we don't nurture and reinforce it. We simply must communicate. We don't have to stop and have long drawn out conversations or anything. All we're talking about here is just a simple wave, a nod, or a smile. Just acknowledege that another individual exists... - Slim :) |

So what if you're riding your bike...It's none of my concern, just ride your damned bike! So what if you've crashed your bike down the mountain...It's none of my concern, you should have been more careful! So what if those guys are mugging you...You should have been better prepared! So what if that guy is stealing your bike...You should have had a better lock! Just when and where does all of this distance $^iT stop! Hey! Hey! You! You! Get Off of My Cloud! I'm in this world alone and that's just how I prefer it! I think I know of a few countries like this...Always makes for great foreign affairs relationships when countries do this! -Slim :) |

This reminds me of a difference between Southerners and New Yorkers --
They say that down in the South, people greet each other left and right, just walking down the street or whatever. This is seen as being congenial and giving a happy face to everybody. In New York, people go about their business, saving their greetings for people that they actually know personally. Greetings from random strangers are taken as, "What do you want? I don't know you -- are you going to ask me for something?" Between the two, it means more to me if the other person is someone I know. If it's a stranger, a greeting becomes a sort of ceremonial obligation, and it loses its meaning. This doesn't mean that I won't engage in a random conversation (talked with one guy for three miles about his bike and where he got fitted for it), but I definitely won't get bent out of shape if there's no exchange at all. |

If I'm digging deep or truly focused on dropping a hammer on myself, I admit I've not waved back or initiated niceness. This morning I passed a guy who was riding the same direction as me, I told him on your left, and while I was passing I said good morning. He just stared at me, blankly, and didn't say a word. It's ass holes like that who give cyclists a bad name. I swear, the lack of conversational skills is what makes people think we are all arrogant ****s. It reminds me of the other day when I rode with the big boys... when I first got there in the morning, nobody was saying a word to each other, and when I got there I tried to say hi and was greeted with sneers. Bunch of dick holes. |
So some cyclists are unhappy arrogant pricks. Hell the world is full of unhappy arrogant pricks that don't cycle who cares go ride.

Why didn't you just say you were lonely? If you want to be part of a community, join a club, do organized rides, volunteer at a bike coop (or start one). There are lots of opportunities to make friends and engage in shared activities without getting bent out of shape because a random stranger didn't wave at you.
What!...Friends? ....Clubs?...Organized Rides?...Volunteering! I didn't say everything was all that damned bad to do all that ****! :D WTF! Just don't wave then! :D :lol::roflmao2::roflmao2::roflmao2::lol: - Slim :) |

I even do this while I am driving my car (I carry spare inner tubes in several sizes and in both presta and schrader and I have a set of tools in my car). But I don't feel the need, or the obligation, to wave at every person who rides past me. It is silly and unnecessary and frankly, I think, it is a colossal waste of time. I regularly go on 60-70-80 mile rides and if I waved at everyone I met, I would have to wear my arm in a sling by the end of the ride. But if I see you in trouble, I will stop and offer assistance/render aid. So, who would you rather meet on the road? The "grouch" who won't wave but will (and is prepared to) help 'ya or the happy-go-lucky rider who is wave-happy but can't offer any meaningful help. Just saying.... |

It would be like being in your car and waving at every car that you go by just because you're in a car.

Yep, like those who feel the need to post about it every time someone else doesn't take the time to wave at them. Now those people are arrogant, and don't seem to enjoy just riding very much.
"Hey, I'm waving at you, I hope you can be happy like me. See how happy I am that we, mere strangers, share a 'common bond', even though we may be riding for completely different purposes? Okay, so maybe you're fresh out of court with a suspended license because of another DUI, but we're totally awesome! You should wave back to me! Hey, ****face, why aren't you waving?!?!!" |
I have an aluminum touring bike.

I ride out in the country. The sticks. Rural America. It's considered polite--and it's customary--to wave at others you encounter along the road. That includes farmers driving tractors, people walking along the road, farmers working the fields, and yes, bicyclists. You can always spot the city slickers out of their element because they don't wave at anyone. Waving hicks like me fit right in, despite my shocking attire.

Well for a well worn thread subject yall are sure putting lots of mileage into this!! Damn funny!!
