I upshift a couple cogs, stand up, hammer as much as I can to catch up, then when I get close, I slow down my breathing, give a casual, "Hey," right as I pass, keep up my momentum until I'm far enough ahead that they can't hear me gasping for air, then take the next turnoff and limp home. :D
Besides that, I think waving at the twenty or thirty random cyclists I see every day is kinda like this: (good find, btw)

That person might also be annoyed by it because he's at the end of a crappy day dealing with crappy people and just looking for some time alone in the saddle and not interested in being sociable with every grinning idiot on a bike. You just don't know. I realize it's hard but try to comprehend that not everyone is just like you.

it just strikes me as weird that in the middle of nowhere two people cross paths with a common interest and can't acknowledge each other.
I can see if you're in a busy, bustling environment or where there's a steady stream of bikers, it's just too much to acknowledge everybody. But when it's in a quiet location off the beaten path and you might see somebody every 20-30 minutes maybe, and they can't acknowledge another human being? Trash. |

Me, I like to see other riders on the road. I smile, nod and lift a finger when we pass. Just one. |
Hmm. In the past I might have waved on a recovery ride but now I just don't in the hope someone starts a thread about it. I have ample opportunities in my life to be nice. The bike isn't supposed to be one of them.

Acknowledging other riding folks just seems like a natural thing to do.
Even on cars and trucks, when I see a truck who is signaling to get in my lane, and I let him in, I would first use my headlights and do the blinking thing. Often, the truck would respond by blinking the rear lights. Back in Michigan it was common to do this, but in California, I see less of this practice. Also in the "olden days" Porsche drivers would do the blink headlights when approaching another Porsche driver. |

See my answer in the fifth waving thread back. It's still the same.
OK. Let's move on to the next handgun thread. |

Whatever you do, though, don't flash your headlights if the trailer is still right next to you. Hopefully the driver can see well enough to know where you are and won't accidentally crowd you into the ditch because you gave a bad signal. /end tangent ;) |
Meh. I used to wave more often, but then I started reading these threads and realized whom I was waving to.

I think...therefore, I am! I grin on a bike...therefore, I am an IDIOT? Nah...I don't think so! Sorry!...You'll have to repeat logic 101 again, as you'll never get to philosophy 101, without first passing its prerequisite. Good Luck! - Slim :) |
I yell "Buongiorno !!!" occasionally. It usually gets a smile.
|
This forum needs a "waving cramps my style" sticky (ala A&S) where people can argue endlessly about waving/not-waving causing moral turpitude and the decline of civil society in general.

Oh, definitely. Every once in a while a waving thread shows up in Commuting, too, and it's like the wavers forget that some people just want to go home after a crappy day in the cubicle.
OTOH- How do guys like you treat your family members when you get home? Do you yell and scream? Do you beat them? Do you kick the dog? -OR- Do you rush for the beer and the bud? Do you self-medicate? Do you watch ESPN? .............................. Just WTH do you guys do when you get home? You sound like you're miserable! :( - Slim :) PS. Please don't tell me that you ride your bikes...Most cyclists are more friendly than you guys! |
some of you should stop making assumptions about people.

Blame it all on social networking. Facebook has ruined our ability to communicate in person............:)

Not very likely. Everyone likes a nice gesture, especially if it doesn't require a lot of time. It's just a wave. Not some solicitor trying to sell you a vacuum cleaner that has a radio.
It's OK to be nice to people. |

No, you're riding a bike, therefore you're an idiot.
You're expelled! You'll never pass because you only go from bad to worse! You're condidtion is most probably viral. There's no antibiotic cure...We can't contain it! OMG.. And, you just admitted to having kids! Please don't have anymore kids.... This disease can only spread and get worse! I've got to find the number to the CDC...Where is it?....Oh! There it is! Have A Nice Day! :) I've got to go now.... |
