What is your top speed down the hill?
I am such a weenie, I hate going faster than 25 mph down Azusa or GMR (or THE GMR as my husband says)
I am just curious to know what other riders top out at going down the hills? At what speed do you realize, "Hey, I am going too fast...perhaps I need to slow down...." Or does that though never cross a guy's mind?
If this thread has already been created, I am sorry, I tried searching for a similar post. I saw the Posting and You video that someone posted on here and it made me self conscious.

Bikes: are fun! :-)
I'm a weenie too. I saw Levi Leipheimer during the Tour of Utah doing 57mph down a hill I usually only do about 45mph down. Levi's teh man!
I find it amusing when recreational riders talk smack about Andy Schlek's descending, and seeming reluctance to let it all go. I wonder if taller riders are at a disadvantage with winding high speed descents because of their higher center of gravity? Anyway, they're all pretty amazing. ...But I have some fun of my own with it--on open roads.
RIP Wouter.

89kmh / 55mph for me... (And yeah, I had that : "I think I'm going to fast!" moment

On a long straight descent, I'll do up to about 50 km/h. On a curvy descent, however, anything over about 25 km/h is too fast.
Rowan and I were talking about this very thing on our ride today. We've signed up for a climbing challenge (7 Peaks), and I will find the climbing part challenging, but the idea of getting down the mountains is frightening. So while we train for the climbing part, we're also going to train for the descending too.

My fastest speed yet was coasting down Charles Road above 9 Mile Dam north of Spokane. I was still accelerating at 45mph when I saw a curve coming that I didn't want to take at that speed. Tapping the brakes made the bike shimmy and shake. Scared me to death. Once I was back down in the 30s things were much smoother.

I regularly hit the high 30s to mid 40s on descents. My fastest top speed to date is 50 mph down a 3/4 mile long hill with a 16% max grade.

GMR is a twisty descent with a handful of decreasing radius curves. The top speeds down it are not impressive by themselves. I don't think I ever spin out my 50/11 going down that, and am often shifting down to pedal out of turns.
As for my all time top speed, I've gotten to about 50mph a few times, and each time was on a long and straight road.

My top speeds on GMR will be in the low 40's, as well as on the lower part of Asuza. (I haven't ridden to Crystal Lake since before they reopened it - and I don't remember my top speed.)
All time top speed is in the mid 50's.

Did GMR for the first time today and I think descending may actually have been harder for me than the climbing. It was definitely more stressful. Most turns I was between 20mph and 25mph. I hit a few turns at 30, 31 on the top portion, but only because they were shallow turns and I could see the exit clearly. I went into one turn way too hot, missed the apex, and almost went into the dirt. My max speed for the day was 37.5.

I hit 75.5 kmph (47 mph) this week. My previous best down the same hill was 73 kmph. I attribute the extra speed to my heavier than usual bike bag that day (it weighed around 10kg). At 60kg, I'm at a weight disadvantage on the descents. I can fly uphill, though.
