Solution for helmet straps?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Solution for helmet straps?

I dont think this has come up before but must affect others so here goes...

A summer of riding with sun cream on my face has turned my helmet straps to a metalic gray, salty, damp gungy mess. No amount of wiping, squeezing or rubbing seems to remove the heavily water resistant build up of sludge within the material - also there must be an easier way? After wearing it, im starting to get skin irritation so need to sort it out.

As far as i can tell the straps are not removable, therefore any technique to dissolve this slime must be compatible with the whole helmet.

Anyone have any good ideas?

scrub them with the rough edge of a sponge and dish/sink soap - or - buy a new helmet.

Get a new helmet

Seriously, I just wash my straps with soap and water every month and deal with the discoloration.

Spray it with a wax and grease remover. You can get it at an auto parts store, then wipe it down.

Be careful with cleaners because helmets can be ruined easily by pretty common chemicals. I spilled rubbing alcohol on a helmet once and it heavily discolored both the styrofoam and the shell.

Talc draws grease out sometimes. I had a chamois cream one time that contained talc and I discovered by accident it was really good at removing chain grease from clothes.

Liquid soap, get a handful and squeeze it onto the straps. Wait a moment and rinse, takes about 90% of the gunk off.

Bikes: are fun! :-)

Just wear it in the shower occasionally. Scrub the straps with some mild soap and be done with it.
