Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

breaking surface on rim...

Disregarding what type of condition or type of brake pads you have here as I am specifically talking about the wheel.

New, good shape or old wheel, is there a way to make your brake surface better than what it is?

Steel wool or really fine grit sandpaper?

Perhaps a scrub pad and some mildy abrasive kitchen type cleaner to get rid of any gunk on the surface. Or a sanding block and some very fine sandpaper. I've never felt the need to try those though.

I use a red scotch-brite pad to clean mine up when they get nasty.

I would think a mild sand paper would work better on the surface as a fine grit would just smooth the surface out, no?

my wheels are nearly new so the surface is fine I'm sure. I was just wondering if there was a way to make them better.

Do you mean better because you don't feel braking is as good as it could/should be? If so, you might just change your pads. I put on some DA pads and braking seems better. Many people swear by swiss stop but I've not tried them yet. My next set will be swiss stop though.

no thats not what I mean. I'm saying even if straight out of the box your brake surface was good, could you make them better? mine are good. I have good brake pads. just didn't know if there was a process that I wasn't aware about to make them EVEN better.

You should NEVER break the surface on the rim.
