Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

am new to this... need help on road bike - should i purchase?

Hi All,

I am a female hieght approx 163cm currently ride a Giant OCR 1 2005 model (https://archive.giant-bicycles.com/au...005&model=9876) paid about $1,700 ($AUS)
and was looking to purchase a womens specific bike - Giant AVAIL ADVANCED 2 (https://www.giant-bicycles.com/_pdf/b...advanced.2.pdf) - $2,599 rrp ($AUS) and have seen one on ebay for $1,200

i was wondering if their was a big difference or not in terms of features and whether i am taking a step forward (or really to the side) in terms of features and money spending etc.

any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!! thanks

I'd say the biggest upgrade/difference will be going to an all-carbon frame. You'll definitely get a smoother, less-harsh ride, resulting in more comfort. Another, not-insignificant, change will be lighter weight: frame, components are lighter, which is certainly a benefit. The Avail also has a 10-speed 105 drivetrain, giving you one more than your current bike, allowing you more options in finding a comfortable cadence. Plus, new 105's shifting performance is very solid. Michelin Pro Optimum tires are top-notch, much better than the stock Dynamics on the OCR. If you're convinced that these benefits are worth buying a new bike, sounds like the Avail is a great deal. Have fun shopping!
