Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

went for a ride Sunday with my friend and picked up a solo rider in the parking lot...ended up taking a route none of us have ever taken, enjoyed it thoroughly and now we have a new riding buddy....I think I'm just too darn social and love soaking up the small bit of info every rider brings to the table.

I did a 70 mile ride solo over the summer when the wife and I went camping with her parents. It really hurt by the end (it was about 20 miles farther than I had done at that point in the season), but it was totally worth it. Not only was it a great HTFU ride for me, but it was great seeing the jaws drop when I got back. They never even thought people would WANT to ride that far, let alone by yourself!

I guess this thread is from before my BF time...

I rode solo about 4500 miles one summer- long before Garmins.

Wonder if I could map it out on ridewithgps?

I have gone a little further on my own on group rides.
Doubled that to 650. It was a organised ride but only one entrant

Yep ... I've been on a few events like that!! My 600K (mentioned earlier in this thread) was just such an event.

I got lost on a century last weekend a year ago. I started late and was pushing to catch the peloton. I made a wrong turn and ended up in BFE. Then my phone died. I was stopping at rural churches and finding water spigots to fill my water bottles. I ended up doing 137 miles before I got back to the start/finish. Funny thing was, as I was cooling off eating food, I thought I could have gone another 20 or 30 miles if I had to. As I loaded up and left, they were still looking for 3 more lost riders.

82 miles for me, only been at this for 3 months. Told by my LBS to hold off on the distance. Did not seem that bad to me. Not very many hills, so that made it easier.

107 Miles. In retrospect, would have been easier in a group or at least with a partner.

Nope. I don't work in the summer. Over 1400 miles in July, over 1000 for August.

When you guys do century rides, do you to take a break or are they nonstop?

I'm going to attempt my first 55-mile ride this weekend. I have 296 miles to date. Any advise?

Most people take breaks. If a century takes 6-8 hours, you're probably going to want to stop to "water the ditch" at the very least.
