Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cleaning my wheels

I dug up an old shimano rs10 wheel that I am thinking about using except there is about a millimeter of gunk, sand, oil, just this coat of crap pretty much covering the entire wheel. The result of years of riding the dirty streets of chicago.

I tried degreasing dish soap but that didnt do much. Im afraid to use something too strong for fear of destroying the bearings and whatnot. Any suggestions as to how I should clean it.

Bikes: Three road bikes. Two track bikes.

Some good shop rags and some elbow grease. Don't use soap. Spray some WD-40 on a rag if you need to break up some of the grime.

I'm a big believer in simple green. I use it every time I wash my bike.

Citrus Degreaser worked well on a set of crummy wheels I cleaned up. Tip the can over the cloth and go easy.

WD-40 or Diesel fuel/Kerosene would be safe for any paint and the bearings. If there are any vinyl stickers, it may lift them. Laser etching and silk-screenings should be OK.

Just saw your signature, isn't there a season between Winter and Summer?
