What was I thinking?
Yep, I road past the guy...he was half looking at his phone and half looking at his bike. Had an "aw what the hey" moment a few blocks later and turned around. Guy had flatted (again, after patching the tube earlier), out of C02, outta luck. He had wheel reflectors so I suppose I should have just ridden off. I even let the Addidas sweats over the bike shorts pass.
Showed him how to pull the wheel off the easy way and look for debris in the tire carcass. Normally I won't handle anything less than the top tier tire offering from any manufacturer...I threw out all my Pro3's when the Pro4's were announced. Sure enough my hands got dirty. I swear the tire might have had a wire bead.
Found the piece of wire in the tread that caused the flat (running over a 1mm piece of debris is inexcusable). Patched the tube and used my frame pump (the follow car was booked...so I go old school on those occasions) to re-inflate. Showed him how to snap the wheel back in.
I suppose I should have split right then ("my work is done here") but I actually let him ride with me. Ex Army officer. Lost his job. Boo hoo. Logging 30-40 miles a day (miles...there's a metric that only a child could love)
Whoop.

He wouldn't have known what TSS was if it was the $1,000,000 question.
We did some climbing and of course I dropped him...but he didn't know the route and I didn't want some exposure death on my hands (SoCal and 48 degrees freaking cold) so I waited a couple of times.
I could tell the bike shop sold him the bike and kicked him out the door...position was like a monkey having carnal relations with a basketball. It was a Caad something and aluminum...with Rival (disdainful spit on the floor). Whatever. We stopped at my house and I threw a couple of tubes I couldn't use (40mm valve stem...really? REALLY???) at him and raised his seat up 2 1/2 inches.
He was pretty amazed at the difference. I yawned.
He mentioned "Bicycling" magazine. I did a spit take.
He had read "It's Not About the Bike". I fell over in an EPO fueled coma.
Whatever. I gotta go download my SRM file from the ride...I'm sure I lost 8 minutes of quality training today with all this BS.

Did you clarify the difference between a cyclist and a bicycle rider?
I'm sure he is still completely aloof to this distinction.

Peloton Shelter Dog
Not where I live Tex. This was the day before Halloween, about 5 weeks ago.
I can only imagine what the winter will bring. If it ever comes. 57ºF here today. In early December. Strange weather.
