Hey guys, I have been having a hard time finding out of biking really is good for weight loss... As I am not nearly as expeirienced as allot of you expert bikers I am going to ask your opinion. Is Cycling a good way to lose weight? If so what kind of support do you have for your statement. Also, have you lost weight cycling? If so how much?
Thanks for all the great feedback guys <3

I have seriously almost doubled my food intake! I have been eating fast food a lot for the past month and I still lose weight.
EDIT: Rode a bit more than 5000 miles last year. Hope to get 7500 this year.

I know this! I have no self control...you should see me when I go out for "a beer", it's like Im back at UGA during gameday...I always end up leaving my truck somewhere and taking a cab to steak & shake at 3am...which is why I don't really go out anymore...

Nope,
1. It tastes nasty
2. Puts chemicals in your body
3. You are going to have to cut back on more than just Soda to lose weight.
I say that just drink soda, but don't go overboard, maybe a can or two per week.(That's how much I usually drink)

There are studies that say that the chemicals in diet soda MAY lead to cancer. Considering what I've been through, I'll pass. I'm just cutting out all soda all together. Well, cutting down to about one a week, when the mood really hits me. Figure I'll lose some weight and not put the chemicals in...just in case they're bad for me!

Is it OK for what? Quenching your thirst? Cleaning bike parts? Using it to clean yourself down there when you have that not-so-fresh feeling?
Honestly? If you're this persistent about asking about diet soda, you're going to drink it regardless of what anybody here tells you.

When I started riding, I was 232 now I am 195. In my expereince, if you ride a lot, and you don't increase your food intake dramatically, you will lose weight.
If you want to loose weight you could walk, run, swim, lift weights, row or a dozen other activities. However, cycling, I think, is one of the best activities because it doesn't beat you up, it is fun and it is something you can do with a group of people.

One more thing to consider...at your young age, any kind of significant weight loss plans/goals should be supervised by a doctor as well as your parents. Ask THEM whether diet soda is OK.

+1 I don't see any point in paying for it. Interesting thing is that since I started just getting a water at restaurants, the rest of the family follows my lead. Eating out is more affordable now.
I also read a couple of articles recently that suggests artificial sweeteners actually encourage overeating. They make your body/brain think something sugary is coming and when that sugar does not arrive the body/brain still craves it, so you overeat. (I still use some in my coffee, however)

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
I had grown to my heaviest-ever weight after I took up cycling as a hobby.
I lost it all (and more) by eating better.
Exercise is only half of it.

Here is my experience for your consideration.
When I started biking to work, I went from zero activity to a couple hours a day and lost 40 pounds in half a year.about 1000 miles.
Then something happened. Not sure what, but I think I started to plateau and ate a bit more. In the following year I rode 5,000 miles but gained back 20#.
Bottom line is that what you eat matters a ton. Exercise alone won't do it.
