Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Stem and a New Fit

I just replaced a 80mm 10deg stem (Pro Carbon) in the up position with a Thomson X2 110mm 10 deg stem in the down position (I flipped it!). I was pretty cramped with the 80mm stem, couldn't get into a low position like they do in those videos I like to watch. The new stem is awesome. The fit will take some geting used to, but I think I'm going to like it. 48 deg and sunny today!

That is a huge change, both in reach and drop. You are supposed to change those things slowly and let your body adapt, you know...

May not be more comfortable, but it looks better.
If you have the flexibility to ride with a lower bar you show in your 'after' picture, then go for it. Looks like a good set up.

I know it's a huge change. And I know I'm supposed to make small increments. But those stems are SPENDY!!!
I can make small changes in the saddle position.
Maybe I will eventually change stem to 100mm.

AllI know is I need to ride more.

And those pix - they are'nt mine.

you shouldn't be changing saddle position to fix your reach

also

pics or it didn't happen

I agree - I wouldn't adjust my saddle position to fix my reach, but I actually had to push my seat back to increase my reach earlier with the shorter stem, so I can safely push it foreward now and get better position overall. And as I said, pix or it didn't happen but I don't do pix so it didn't happen. Maybe someday... there won't be a before picture because now it's after and there's no turning back.

Don't let the stem nannies scare you. If you felt like you needed more stretch, you probably needed more stretch.

The last time I swapped my handlebar, for a new compact model, I thought I felt cramped. Then when I came back from the shop ride, our fitter said, "Hey, did you change something? You look a little cramped on your bike." That evening I bought a 13 cm stem on eBay.

P.S. I want to see a photo of that Tanguy frame. One of my buddies won the Maine International Road Race on a Tanguy.

It will look cool and after all, what else matters...I'm somewhere between a 90 and a 130 from -6 to -10, it's confusing....

U are that tall and u were using a 8 cm stem?? Ti-rex style or something?? At that height unless u are like a t-rex u should be using at least an 10 cm going to 11 cm if not 11.5

I love new stems. I went from 100 to 130 all at once and it was a good thing.

I'll ride later today and report back - I haven't taken it our for more that 10 minutes yet. I have to write my performance appraisal first. Plus, I'm waiting for it to warm up. It's 36 deg now, supposed to break 40 later.

I disagree with this. IF (big if) the final position is within reason (like a fitter or someone knowledgeable tells you it's a position within limits) go straight to the final position. It's like taking off a band-aid. More pain but for a short time (rip it off at once) or less pain for a long time (rip it off slowly). I choose to suffer for a little bit and have it done with. Why spend the time to adapt to the "middle" positions you're not actually going to ride (and have the uncomfortableness recur multiple times)?

I changed my stem last Saturday, but I went the other way around. I went from a 110 mm, 7º stem to a 90 mm, 7º stem because I was sliding forward on the saddle every time I went to ride on the hood. And yes, it was done by a fitter (Retul) to make adjustments from my original fitting, a year ago, when I never rode the hoods.

I'm very happy with the new set-up. way more comfort and power in the drops. back is more relaxed, and there is less weight on my hands also.
