Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rainy Day Zipp Makeover

Today was finally a nice dreary day with little to do, so I took the old decals off the 808s and threw on the new "Beyond Black" decals. I have to say I like 'em--quite a bit more understated than the old decals.

It's pure cosmetic bling, but I like 'em.

I have yet to lose one. The Arundel Dave-O is key. Or any other good cage. X-Lab makes one called the Gorilla too, and Profile Kages are known to work quite well.

Looks great Doc..Love that bike also. Thought about getting one, but no way I could get in that position, and if I did I probably couldn't get back up

You'd be surprised. When an 80-plus degree seat tube angle is legal you can do all kinds of things.

Hey, if you could make the geometry work for ya, it would be fun... Otherwise, Argon's road bikes are pretty nice too.

Any tips on the decal replacement? I'm about to do the same to my 404's.

Looks great! Boy I spent 2 days taking off mine on a pair of 404's last year. Those stickers are no easy task to take off.

Very cool. Great way to compliment and offset the white of the frame. Sorta allows the frame and wheels to each stand out on their own.

Follow Zipp's video completely. While they don't say it specifically in the video, take the whole decal off, hold it in both hands, and set the inner part (the "speed weaponry" part) first. Don't try to peel it halfway off then try to set the rest of it.

Also, Because of the valve stem decals the Zipp decals are not evenly spaced around the wheel. Pay close attention to where the decals are located. On my front wheel, for instance, the letter E in "weaponry" was centered between spokes. Once you acetone all the glue off there won't be many marks from the old decals, so pay attention. Hope that helps.

Did you use a blow dryer? That made it quite easy. Except that the decals got pretty friggin' hot.

Man that looks great. Other than the pricetag, the obnoxious logos were the only other reason I had not to get Zipps. Are these 3rd party decals, or does Zipp themselves sell them?

They come direct from Zipp. They're the new decals that they're putting on all the 2012 models.

My wallet and my wife are not happy about this development.

Haha. Get some used 2011s and just buy the decals.

I did, though they just came off in tiny little pieces at a time. I'm glad you didn't have to endure what I did, my wife was laughing at me for days.

I will say that when I didn't get the decals pretty hot I ran into that a little. Luckily my curly-haired wife has the Cadillac blow dryer.

Did my front wheel yesterday -- easy breezy.

My decals all came off easily in one piece after a quick and very mild warmup with a heat gun.

If you look closely (at least on my 404 clinchers), the rims are built in six carbon sections. Just visually center the new decals on the appropriate section. No need to use spokes for alignment.

I can understand taking them off. It's putting others on that leaves me at a loss. What benefits accrue from 6 big Zipp logos on each wheel?

Mostly they help you to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women.

The Firecrest rims don't seem to have the 6 sections anymore-at least not my 808s. Made things a little trickier.

Because it makes all those skinny little swimmers that much angrier when my 210-pound a$$ blows by them on the bike leg.
