Questions about Speedplay Frog Cleat Installation
I just got my first set of clipless pedals, Speedplay Frogs. I had my LBS install them but the shoes ended up being too small and I didn't feel like making the hour drive to have the cleats switched to the new pair of shoes so I did it myself. I just took a spin on the trainer and everything seems fine but I have a few questions.
1. Speedplay makes a big deal about not over tightening the cleat screws but others have said that the screws will come off if you don't tighten them a little more than what speedplay recommends. I tightened mine fairly snug using a small multi-tool. I wasn't bearing down as hard as I could but the screws are fairly snug. Does this sound reasonable or should I loosen them a little?
2. Should I have reapplied loctite?
Thanks in advance,
-Mike

I think the LBS guy greased the screws and everything is snug and working well so guess I am all set.
A couple more questions.... Do I need to buy speedplay's grease gun for pedal maintenance or can I use something else like a syringe? Also, is set screw adjustment typically needed during the life of the cleat?

I have two pairs of Frogs. The original set has seen three years of hard use in all four seasons, and I haven't had to regrease them. These are pretty tough, hassle-free pedals. I swapped my inital set of cleats around quite a lot without prepping the screw threads and they have never come loose. I tighten the screws down really tight. If they are not fully tight, the leaf spring/clip doesn't pop out as far as it should to ensure foot retention. My LBS made this mistake on one cleat when I first got them. I was pulling out of one pedal, so I rode back and the owner showed me how the cleat worked, tightened it down more and I was good to go. Also, once you get the set screw where you want it, you won't need to fiddle with it again. Great pedals!

I use a cheap grease gun from harbor freight, I grease them aevery couple of month, most times doing some other maint work and have the gun handy. Also shoot a a little lube on your cleats every couple of weeks. It seems to kep the small metal tab moving better

JT--Thanks very much. This is reassuring on many levels. Everything feels solid and your comments make me feel better about how much I tightened the cleats... I am getting used to the float on the trainer at least. Can't wait to get out and see how they feel on a road ride.

Great idea on Harbor Freight. I've got one just down the street. Thanks.
