Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I did 6550 in 2003 and I'm within 50 miles of 8000 this year.

2005 - 6500. More than that and finding the time to ride becomes a job and I'm not interested in turning my riding into that.

Trogon. I think you are right. There reaches a point when it is not fun any more. I was challenged this year by some long distance organized events. I have more planned this year. Trick is to keep it fun.

Going for age times 100 - so 4300 in 2005.

I read the 100 x age in another forum and liked the concept, pluss the # fits close with my commute miles plus fun rides.

We shall see come Dec 05.

So 6,000 when you turn 60? I suppose you will be retired and have the time to dedicate. You might match some of the Poms... but only just. And 9,000 when you turn... I think a case of diminishing returns. You're still young. Impressionable. You'll grow out of it.

I'm at 7,155 miles for 2004 with an average mile per ride of about 44. I work 40 hours a week and play on a mens soccer team on Saturday. I leave Sunday open for a 60 to a 100 mile ride with shorter 30+ mile rides after work. (2003 - 4,250 miles, 2002 - 2,850 miles, 2001 - 226 miles, 10 years prior to that 0 miles having dedicated those years to the items below).

To get there, its easy just ignore the wife or girlfriend, the yard, the house, the cars and kids!

Just started riding in July and with work and everything else I have 661 so far this year. It's only 5 degrees outside now, but I think I can get another 39 miles to make it 700 for the year.

Next year I want to get in at least 2000 with at least 2 centuries. And 26 miles of that I want to be dragging behind Hipcycler next summer.

Done. Done. Done. Done. Done.

Divorced 15 years. I saw the light early on.

The yard is small, and still overgrown. I'll have to cut the grass eventually or they'll evict me.

The cars? The cars? I DON'T OWN ONE and haven't in seven years. Why do you have to own cars... oh, don't bother, I can't stand hearing the excuses.

Divorce took care of that. I paid my alimoney. They're grown up now and lead their own lives.

Lifestyle choices. Lifestyle choices.

I do it for fun and relaxation and exercise, and I plan on riding as many miles in 2005 as I enjoy it.

I have 4,017 so far in 2004 (3,200 commuting/misc., 800 Saturday club rides). I may get one more commute ride this year. My 2005 goal is 4.200, but I am hoping to do (2,800 commuting/misc., and 1,500 Saturday club rides). The Saturday club rides are the ones that really push my lungs to the limit. The commute rides are base miles that I can push alittle or take it easy.

I had 1500 on my log, but that only ran from late June on. I started earlier in the spring without a computer or a log so I probably did around 2500 total. Towards the end I was getting stronger and doing longer rides of 60+ miles on weekends.

So my goal is to do at least 3000 and more if I can. The limiting factor is work, kids and the other usual house stuff, and the weather.

About 3k miles this year and didn't slow down the pace after an elbow fracture (I didn't know it was fractured until about 8 weeks after) ...

Maybe 4k in 2005 - my office moved closer to my house and there's a gym across the street, so it's a great set-up for commuting.

Weather sucks here in MA though .. and the job and kids keep my busy.

I would like to get up to averaging 100 miles a week. The problems I have is that I don't want cycling to cut into my swimming, which is a sport that I've really invested a lot of time and effort and have actually competed in this year.

I did that by doing one long ride 50-60+ miles and then a few shorter ones of 15 or so miles. The short ones usually only took about 45 minutes, so it wouldn't eat into family time, and it was "see ya later" for the long ones. I guess if you're also spending time in the water it's a lot of time. My other pursuit involved a remote control. (Actually I've been building audio gear, so I'm just enjoying the fruits of my labor.)

When all was said and done though, they saw less of me later. I lost 35 pounds and had a good time doing it. My wife encouraged me to leave the house and said the chores can wait till later. I've even convinced her I need a new bike that is at least at the level of what I've had for 20+ years, so about $3000 should do it.

https://www.uvm.edu/~rboles/images/au...gangoffour.jpg I'm in the foreground with my back to the camera. I weighed 195 there. I'm almost skinny now.

Well, I did 2400 miles in 2004 (May-December), so I think I can reasonably expect to do about 5000-7000 miles in 2005. Seriously.

I'm shooting for a minimum of 1,000...hoping to get closer to 1,500 though.

I have a new baby so I can't sneak out like I did earlier in the year (not that I got that many miles in anyway). He (the boy) starts daycare in January and my work schedule rotates so I should conceivably be able to grab an hour or so daily for 6 out of every 9 weeks.

For 2004 I got about 600 I guess- 400 or so between the end of June (new bike) and August 3 (when the baby came). I was on a beater bike (I got hit on my $20 yard sale find Campy equipped Bianchi and was riding an old Trek 400 until the insurance man paid up) and didn't have a computer until I bought my Zurich. Now the Trek is for the trainer and the Zurich is for the riding.

Rowan, you are right! Chris rocks! He has posted some photos take from his front yard. Very impressive.
Besides, why would anyone begrudge him for a car free lifestyle? I don't get it.
