I just received a new set of carbon wheels. I put them on last night and realized that since the coated brake track is lowered, my Cane Creek SL brakes will not allow me to go low enough to center my pads on the braking surface. I've done some research and I believe my SL's say they have a reach of 39-49mm. The only ones I find that say they have a longer reach are Tektro's at 47-59mm. If I were to buy a set of Tektro's that say the reach is 47-59mm, would that allow me to lower my pads so they would be centered in the brake track?

You can get offset brake pad holders. They position the pads a little lower. They often come with Gigantex rims which also have a lowered brake track. The only source I know is bdop cycling and their website shows them out of stock. You could ask them if they'll be getting any in, or ask BikeHubStore if they have any extras (they sell gigantex rims).

Your brakes are fine, they do not need to be centered.

Eric - Thanks for the feedback. I've contacted Brandon at BikeHubStore but he doesn't have any extras. I've also sent an email to Bdop. I found a set that I think would work on Ebay but it's 3 weeks shipping from Europe. Maybe I'll give that a shot. I just hate to have to buy a new set of long reach brakes to make this work.


Brian - In order to keep my warranty, the brakes need to be centered on the braking surface. Where the pads currently sit, there is contact above the braking surface which could cause the rims to delaminate. I'd rather not take that risk if I don't have to and prefer to have the brakes centered in the track.

FYI - We got tired of waiting and opened tooling for our own extended holders. They will be 95% like the Gigantex holders but we have refined the interface between the curved washer and the holder itself. This should make adjustment smoother and easier to get spot on.
