Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

going completely numb and malfunctioning are two completely different things. usually a seat tipped up will do it or seat needing to come forward. the notch down the middle type saddles work well for me and a wee bit more padding like what WTB offers will help. sometimes you just got stand up and stretch out.
numb is fun.

I "test" myself after most rides. Still good so far.

Get some bibs, a "not too padded" (padding is BAD, your sitbones goes down into it and you finish sitting on "the important things" )saddle and ride. If you're feeling some numbness, something is definitely wrong.

I am partial to wrapping it up in bubble wrap, and a little aluminum foil to make sure any aliens dont hit it with radiation beams or anything

A bad saddle fit can cause problems. If you have problems, they can be fixed relatively easily.

Due to the controversial nature of this question and answer the following video may NOT be suitable for work.

Totally true. To fix it, get married (thereby obviating the need for function).

I had a professional fit and still had a problem with too much pressure not in front, not in back, but right in the middle. It was bearable if I rode for an hour, but longer rides made me sore for a couple of days.

The fitter had a wall full of demo saddles, so one slow Sunday afternoon we just started going through them one at a time. They were all pretty much the same for me, until I got to the Selle SMP. To me, there was obviously less pressure on my perineum area. I told the fitter "that's the one"! However, he said that if I liked that one, I should try one more... the Adamo Breakaway. For me, that seat was a revelation! Now I ride for hours with no pain "down there".

Three warnings:

1) The Adamo seats put more pressure on your sit bones. That can cause some pain, but the makers say it will go away after a few rides, and that was my experience.

2) Compared to most high performance seats, the Adamo seats weigh as much as a brick. After tinkering with parts, wheels and other bits over time to reduce the weight of my bike, I had to swallow hard before putting on a saddle that weighed more than 100g more than the one it replaced. The difference is that I can ride for hours on the heavy seat, and I was in pain on the light seat.

3) Saddle preferences vary TREMENDOUSLY from one rider to another. I'm sure that there are at least as many people who hate Adamo saddles as those who love them.

Bottom line: Get a good fit. Also spend some time trying a bunch of different seats. I tried three or four seats over a month or two, but I had much better luck when I found an excellent LBS with a wide variety of demo saddles and spent a couple of hours trying one seat after another. It worked!

I just changed to a Selle SMP saddle and WOW is it better than any other saddle I have used in 9 years (5 saddles). There are several others who have had very positive comments SMP's as well in the thread. No negatives, imagine that for BF.

Since I got my removable penis, things have gotten much easier. I make sure that I keep it in one of the jersey pockets in case it is needed while away from home.
