The rider does not choose the saddle; the saddle chooses the rider.

I've come to believe this...almost.

For me, any flat or hammock-type is okay. But coming to this realization took years of trial and error. I had an Ideale 90 in the 1980s that I never fit properly, yet rode for probably 20,000 miles. I've had all variety of stock saddles - and found them to be too padded, generally.

Firm with less padding and a fairly flat shape...that's the ticket.

I've come to like the E3 Form a lot, but not exclusively. It's good for about six hours of riding - after that, some tenderness on the sit bones. The narrow nose and tapered seat sides do a lot to eliminate chafing, though.

Good luck. PG

Just to simplify things for the OP and anyone else looking to this thread for advice. It's not like choosing the "wrong" saddle will make your bike unrideable or anything. A really low quality saddle might actually hurt, but most saddles will only prove unworthy after many miles and lots of little things that don't necessarily make a deal breaker on their own. If the stock saddle proves not good, take a stab at something that seems like it will work and ride it for a while. Most people don't even ride enough to view the stock saddle as bad.

SMP Pro, yes expensive, but less expensive than the total I spent on the 4 others I went thru till I tried and kept the SMP

Looks.

In about 30 years of cycling, I have run into 1 (one!) that isn't comfortable. It is a Serfas Stinger-race Comp that I slapped on a fixed. I still use it, don't want to start wimping out now!
