Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best used road bike for $500

I know there's other threads like this but I couldn't find anything current.

I've been looking around for something at the $500 price point that's used. Want something that's a newer model (2009+) and a name brand.

What should I be looking for?

Name brand? Look for 105 mix, carbon fork, and decent wheels (or at least decent condition). Might take some time.

There's a scattante bike with 105 components on my CL... if i wasn't in the market for wheels, i would buy that as a loaner/backup bike.

Maybe. If I were you, I'd be willing to go with Tiagra, older than 2009, or a more generic brand. But you never know. I bought a barely-used '09 Scattante last night for $500 from C-List. Full carbon, Mavic wheels, Ultegra 6600. Not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet (probably flip it), but I couldn't pass it up.

Good choice as well. I was able to grab a CAAD8 with older Tiagra and brand new r500 wheels for $550. Passed that one along to a friend and he loves it.

Dan - Im in Endicott, and I look at the Ithaca and Bingahmton CL all the time, and I'm not seeing that at all. I'm looking for a road bike - preferably a cross bike really - for my wife, so if you see a 52 cross bike at a decent price do me a favor and shoot me an IM.

In the past couple of years it seems like Craigslist has become either 1) Walmart junk, or 2) People who bought a nice bike and never rode it, so think they should be able to get what they paid for it 5 years ago.

Perfect example of that-

The MSRP was $560. I wouldn't pay more than $350 for this, and even that's high.
