Riding miles shouldn't do much of anything to the cleats. How much walking have you been doing in them? You can get Kool Kovers to make the cleats last longer for those times you're not on the bike.

I have Crank Bros cleats that have over 5,000 miles on them and still work like a champ. Those look downright impossible to walk in.

If walking is what is causing the damage, then just abandon your Roadie vanity and do the sensible thing - MTB shoes. Plenty of threads on this topic, but it boils down to the fact that only derfs in this forum will notice that your road bike and shoes do not match.

I walk uneven too i guess since the left cleat is not as bad as this one.

I wear SPD-SL 6 degree cleats too. I walk a little bit, but man, those are chewed to hell and back. I've probably got over 2500 miles on my latest pair. What the heck are you walking on?

The walking I do is into convenience stores, or across parking lots to a porta-potty when I drive to a particular ride.

I think it's also more of the way i walk instead of where i walk. I dont lift up my feet enough.

Since the wear is uneven it's likely the foot you unclip at stops getting worn more? Be sure you don't drag your unclipped foot AT ALL when coming to a stop. Make a concious effort to just set it down.

Or just track stand.

I have the same cleats and have about 6,000 miles on them and have less wear than those. Less walking more riding and you'll get more life out of them.

... cleats are cheap. just replace them when they wear out and worry about other more important things like... matching your bar tape to your tires or something...

That can lead to pulling out in a sprint. They do need to be replaced when the front tab is getting thin, chipped off.

I actually make a conscious effort to alternate which foot to unclip on stops. Im sure it's my odd way of walking.

I purchase mine on-line for $20, and move my right cleat (stays on bike at stops) to my left foot and put a new one on the right... so $10 per change.

If not, might be worth switching to look pedals if i dont end up liking using cleat covers since their xleats are that cheap.

No they don't and these are aftermarket cleats. The regular Look cleats cost as much as the SPD-SL as far as I know.

Just try not scraping your feet when you come to a stop or walking on them too much.

If speedplay cleat replacements were that inexpensive, I'd replace more frequently. I love the feeling of new cleats. I usually wait until they get pretty hard to get in and out of.

That cleat must be worn from either pushing off hard with his foot when started or dragging his foot when he stops. I walk a lot with my SPD-SLs and get 4 or 5,000 miles form them
