Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, hate to say it, but what's rain? Doesn't seem to exist in South TX anymore

Maybe rain will come back one day. I've been riding for one year and go out four days a week on the bike and only once did rain cause me to cut my ride short (only did 52 miles that day)

Getting caught in the rain is one thing, but opting to go out when its already coming down is another.

Raining days are Woodworking days.

Ride. Not being a glib, I rode in the rain this morning. Otherwise, find something else that excites you, work on the bike, work on the social skills, read something, make something.

I was on the edge of insanity because I just want to ride my bike in some decent weather. And I don't have an indoor trainer.

So what do you do on rainy days when you can't ride?
I ride nearly every day in all-weather including snow and subzero cold wherever I need to go and to try to lose weight, get back into shape and continue to be able to walk, although poorly, despite dealing with or the after effects of: 4 strokes, several concussions, being quadriplegic for several minutes after a ski crash, (1 of hundreds of ski and bike crashes), 4 bad discs a pinched nerve and arthritis in my low back, 1 bad disc in my neck, asthma, chronic bronchitis, hay fever, lung scarring, 3 pulmonary embolisms, 3 inguinal hernias, 1 naval hernia with failed repair, 3 muscle hernias in my shins that were never repaired, double carpal tunnel syndrome, a hand with a dislocated thumb along with 2 bones next to it and torn tendons and ligaments- that I didn’t know about for around 30 years, a 26mm plug in the hole in my heart, peripheral neuropathy, being hit by 5 cars, a collapsed lung, 3 broken collarbones, a separated shoulder, sludge like blood that requires taking “thinners”, arthritis in my fingers that prevent making fists. There may be more I can’t think of or don’t want to get into. I quit driving a year and a half ago and have gone 20 years without a car. I even moved across the state in the winter on the bike and have been on group “fun” rides where the snow or should I say slush was 4 inches deep on the top of my feet!

And you don’t ride just because it’s raining? You Pu--y

Any day you are on the right side of the dirt is a good day to ride

Kudos!!!
You my friend are a warrior!!!
I ride with a neighbor who suffered a stroke a few years ago, he's one of the reasons I'm such an avid cyclist.
Yes I've been riding most of my life, but knowing someone who "lives to ride/rides to live" motivates me to be a better cyclist, to know more than I knew yesterday, & to "live to ride/ride to live" just like he does.
I got bad knees, & a messed up back, but it doesn't hold me back either.
It rains so much here, when I see rain, I laugh, I'll pack my rain gear, but most of the time it goes unused.
My bike clothes dry off during work, & I throw them in the wash whether they get wet or not.

@: sstang13
You ask: "What do you do on rainy days?"
I live in a city people like to call "Rain City"...
I'd rather ride in the rain, than @ night.
I use the trainer after dinner when the sun goes down, & when the arthritis is unbearable from the rain, or extreme cold.
(I have winter gear, for the cold days.)
Best advice to "What do you do on rainy days?" be prepared for anything.

But posting in this thread and pretending like the OP's concern never applies is idiotic.
So is policing a thread you didn't start. The thread went from just a couple debatably off topic posts (which happened to exactly answer the OPs original question even if they failed to address his reply buried on the 2nd page) to that plus a guy verbally abusing people for an honest mistake. Not good for anyone.

There are some really idiotic comments in this thread.

The one that stands out the most is someone implying that Swedish erotica is only meant for rainy days.

I rode for nearly two hours this AM. It started hammering rain 30 minutes in. My gloves weren't warm enough. That's the kiss of death on a wet ride. You have to stay warm.

I ride an hour or two in the rain every now and then. What I often think about on days like today is that is the pros RACE in those conditions for 4-6 hours at a clip. Man that would really, really suck.

Booties help considerably, but real rain will fill everything with water. Have a fan blow in them or in the winter put them on a heat vent. They'll be dry in a few hours

how much of this was tongue in cheek?

fwiw, i commuted for 4 years (3 in the midwest and 1 in socal). i have done heat, rain, snow, blizzard, extratropical cyclone, windstorm, flood, etc. i know all the tricks. rain still sucks.

i will say that not everyone has heat vents on the ground at the office. my best method was to remove the sole, undue all of the latches, and pull the tongue out.

From another thread I was just reminded what I used to do: stair climbing. 10x12 flights in the back stairs of my building. Very effective interval training.

I have a fan hidden underneath my desk that blows directly in my shoes. It's the difference between your shoes being dry and still being full of water after 8 hrs.

What I dislike about the rain is that grime wrecks equipment and that the water lubes/hides sharp things which increases flats. But that kind of stuff won't keep me from riding.

Okay first, congrats on pulling through all of the injuries you had/have, I do respect that. What I don't respect, is the language. There is no need for that. And if you misread let me repeat... if you look at my post on the second page, I pretty much state that I am not afraid of rain, I have ridden in it before and I will ride in it again! What I asked more clearly for was, are there any alternatives to riding in the rain? Once I do get the proper gear for riding regularly in the rain, I will. For now, I am on the same boat as fly:yes/land:no, and do not want to idle my gear for a nice day that will come tomorrow.

I put on proper rain attire and go ride. There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad/inappropriate gear.

It wouldnt suck a single iota if you were PAID to ride in the rain as a pro.

Hmm go to my desk job, or get paid to ride my bike in the wet for a few hours? I'll take the latter, and I even like my job.

My apologies, the reply was meant to inspire and “build a fire” under those who read it. As for the ”language”, I am sorry you took offense. I was called a “pu--y” last week by a friend who was teasing me for riding a fendered bike, we tease lot here . I forget I am not talking to friends.

When the snow is too deep ( it can get hip deep) cross country skiing, Sorels, push ups sit-ups etc , yoga, lifting, ergometer, rowing machine, snow shoes, stair running

I didn't read the whole thread so someone may have said this already, but since I compete all year around (road, crit and cross), I use inclement weather as a training motivator. I figure I can't choose the weather I race in so I'd better not choose my training weather either.

Out of the five or six guys that I regularly ride with, only about two of us will pedal rain or shine.
