Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cool

This story is just friggin cool.

This is what rescues road cycling from its inherent stupidity. Because underneath all the posing, fredliness, road nazi dbaggery and skullfarkery, most of us realize why we do this. It's a lifestyle, a philosophy, a life affirming and enriching pursuit, and sometimes it saves people's lives.

By far the best part is all the Cross racers taking this guy under their wing. Most racers are actually not complete aholes and dbags, any impressions left you by any detours into the 33 notwithstanding.

That is a great story. Most overweight people are just lazy. There are many ways to help them lose weight. This guy is a perfect example.

Very inspiring. Cycling did what the surgery could not, make him part of a community and develop friendships. The benefits go way beyond weight loss.

Wow, I remember when the guy started following me on Strava , I have ridden with the other guys from MIT and GLV (Zipcar kit guy). I know it sounds stupid but I never followed him back since I tend to make it a point to only follow guys I have had some previous contact/ chats with.

I give him kudos for his fight, and his triumph.

And yeah: Zach is one cool guy. But he totally needs to learn how to budget his power on the Marathon Ride.

Oh yeah, most skinny folks are dbags, and then some are just a-holes. Guess I'm not like what you think most are like; I put in more miles than most cyclists and don't hide indoors all winter long. I'm working on losing my extra weight. Hey that said what a great story proving how wrong over generalizations are. Thankfully there seems to be no shortage of big hearted people in the cyclocross community. Hats off to them for looking past outward appearances.
