Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chain Advice/Opinions

I need to replace two chains soon, both are at 1/16" "stretch" of 12".

One bike has 10 speed Ultegra 6600 and the other has 9 speed Tiagra/Sora triple set up.

I've found the Shimano CN-6701 several places for under $40. Also found the Shimano CN-HG73 for around $25.

Anyone have chains they prefer more that can be found at sround this same price or lower?

Any brands or models you would avoid?

Are there any compatiblity issues I should be worried about?

Thanks

Shimano chains are fine. I like the ultegra chain.

I prefer KMC though. The X10-SL and DX10 are both very good. Sounds like the DX10 is more your budget. The only gotcha is an easy one-- you need a 10 speed and a 9 speed chain. Definitely not interchangable.

Thanks, I started riding when they had 7 and ultra 7 and they had different chains and then rode an 8 for years. The 10 is the first I've owned and the 9 is my GF's so I've never replaced either. Good to know there aren't different 9's or 10's.

I read the recent thread about KMC chains and saw that a lot of people like the X10-SL. I'll have to look at my budget, I've been spending a fair amount lately gearing up for a week long ride in Colorado although I just looked on ebay and the silver X10-SL in not much more.

Do you have a preferred 9 speed chain?

I have a KMC DX10-SC on both of my 9 speed bikes right now. Technically one is mine and one is my wife's. They recently came out with a newer version of it, I think. It's quiet, reasonably priced, it shifts well, and it comes with a good missing link.

I put the more costly X10-SL on my road bike. It's all the stuff plus lighter and sheds funk better.

The new versions are the X10.93 and X9.93, no?

Was looking at the KMC website and wondering about that.

Is there any difference in function and durability betweent the X9.93 and X9.99?

My bike came with Shimano 10s chain, but when I replaced, due to the easy link, I went with KMC. After 6 years, I have never had any problems with these chains. They are incredibly well made and cost less than many other chains.
