Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lightest clipless pedals for under $100?

Looking to buy some reasonably light clipless pedals to replace my old heavy 1980's Look ones. What do you guys like/recommend? I am looking mostly for used pedals to keep the cost down (Budget around $100, something decent for less wouldnt kill me though)

You can get cheap pedals or you can get light pedals, but cheap and light is difficult.

On the other hand, if you don't mind used, I'm selling a set of DuraAce PD-7810 pedals in the For Sale forum for $95.

Bikes: '07 Cervelo P2C, '12 Specialized Roubaix SL3 Expert, 2011 Specialized TriCross Comp.

Ultegra's are also $109 on Amazon.com

105's are about $60

you probably won't notice a difference between the two. They are both great options

Performance "Look-alikes" can be had for ~$80 - replaced mine after 20K only because me wanted to - the part the holds the cleat in the back is worn a bit; replaced with Keo max, list $200, paid just over $100.

I ride with Xpedo pedals and love them. They even recently completely replaced the pedals I had crashed in, no questions asked.

You could get their "Thrust NXS" pedals for $89 and have a pair of 220gr carbon body/chromo spindle pedals.

I got my Forte Keo compatible pedals from Performance on sale for way less than $80. They hold up fine and work just as well as my real Look Keo Max Carbon pedals. I can't tell the difference when riding.

check out Bebop pedals. They can be had for about $100. Dual side entry and pretty beefy cleats. They are quite small and light and you can upgrade to Ti axles to drop more weight.

They are Wellgo pedals I believe. Reviews are all over the place on those. I had some until I pulled out of the pedal on a climb and almost crashed. That was a long time ago though so they might be better now.

+1

I bought my Ultegra SPD-SL pedals on sale through Performance for $90. Even though I got a great deal, in retrospect I probably would have been better off saving the money and going with 105s.

I've got 2500+ miles on my pair of 6700 SPD-SL pedals with absolutely no problem. When these eventually wear out, I'll buy another pair. Don't squeak, postive click-in, durable bearings.

Pretty sure it's Wellgo. Pedals might be just fine. My only quibble with the Look pedals is that I wear out the cleats super fast (which might have something to do with why I pulled out that one time). The Time cleats last a lot longer for me, plus my iClics came with 2 sets of cleats.

And they don't have free float. There is always spring pressure on the float mechanism.

Float feels fine to me - can't imagine that's a big issue.

Speedplay light action pedals are $115, and weigh 210 grams.

I believe the iClic + cleat combo is lighter though. Ok, I'll shut up about iClic. I've ridden all the pedals mentioned so far and they are all good suggestions.

My impressions:

Speedplay - Fairly affordable and light. Dual sided entry is awesome. Only downside is size of platform on the pedal (IMO) and cleats can get dirt stuck up in them. Personally though I prefer Speedplay Zero's to Light Actions.
Look - Great pedal only downside was cleat wear for me.
Shimano - Great pedal. Heavier and more expensive. Extremely reliable performance and nice broad platform. Cleats last longer than Look and are more 'walkable'.
Time - Light and you can find great deals (got my iClicks which are the cheapest/heaviest of the series for $55 w/2 sets of cleats - 260 grams). Very light pedal/cleat combo. Cleat is the best for walking IMO, and very low stack height. Cleats also last much longer for me than Look or Shimano. The one downside at least here is no one carries them locally so I have to order cleats online.

Light is not that big an issue with pedals IMHO. Quality function IS. Personally I would look to spend $15-40 more and go with Speedplays. I've used lots of different pedals and the Speedplays are by far my favs and they generally weigh in 50-100g less than other pedals. Definitely worth the extra money and over the years of use that difference from $100 to $130ish is negligible.

If cash is REALLY a problem then maybe look to lightly used Speedplays (or others) and just be sure to budget in cleat replacement in the future...

I love my speedplays, but the cleats are pricey. On the good side, they last longer than any other road cleat available.
