Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anybody got a link to Phil Gaimon's power flow chart. IIRC it was in the May 2011 Velonews.

Every terminus of the chart has a different reason why posting your FTP in public is a bad idea. (i.e. if it's low, your weak, if it's high, your fat, or your tactically deficient.)

i dont really think the op understand what ftp is, or what a normal ftp is. pro's are in the 400 range, i doubt there are even a handful of people on the forum who are over 350, and most will be heavier guys (over 150) (honestly i can only think of about 10 guys).

Love this rule!

Earlier this year I bought a $2700 bike (should have been $3800 but I got last years model). I just crossed 2000 miles on it therefore only 700 more to go before a new bike (though I doubt my flawed logic will get past the wife :-) )

FTP is 60 minute power so I can take my 10 minute power times 6 right?
409 X 6=2454
As good a guess as I can make since I'm not good enough for a power meter.

The T-Mobile riders in the link I posted were a tad under 400 watts for an hour.

And it really does depend on weight. My FTP would be reasonably impressive if I didn't weigh a ton.

exactly (400 range means 400 +- 20 watts)! heavier pros are generally a hair above 400 and lighter pros are in the high 300's. I've come to realize you dont need a huge ftp to do well in racing, actually, half the time it comes to bite u in the ass! You think you can do a lot more than you should!

Since we are guessing FTP. If your are 35 or less and over 200 pounds you can buy any bike. Lots of BF people should qualify.

This formula and the OP's rules should make my wife happy. I'm limited to < $3k for a bike.

Crap, now my biggest concern is that I just bought a $3000+ bike in June and its now August. I don't come close to the Watts needed to own it. Will the bike shop I bought it at understand that I need to return it....or shouldn't they be blamed for selling me a bike I'm not actually allowed to ride?

Thank goodness I still have my Hybird in the shed....

Using that formula, every 50 year old should produce 4.07 watt/kg. Yeah, that seems typical. And if you're 35 or younger, you'd better be hitting 4.4 watt/kg.

rofl

i don't know what is FTP? FTP is the highest pace you can keep for an hour
Cancellara has an FTP of 480 watts+, Tony Martin is close to that, they can ride any bike they want!

I don't know wtf you guys are talking about. The only thing I know is that Strava calculated my average power today at 152w. Should I sell my current bike and buy one at the thrift store?

Don't confuse average FTP with sustained FTP.
