Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good indoor trainer

I am looking around for an indoor resistance trainer. The bike I am riding on is a 2012 TREK 1.1. I am looking to spend about $100-$150. Any suggestions?

I really like the Cycleops wind trainer. It's probably the loudest you can possibly get, but it's really cheap and feels great. Way better than anything else under 300.

Look on Craigslist. I've seen Cyclops Fluid 2s on Madison CL for $150-$200. I bought one last year and am really happy with it. Kurt Kenetic would be another great choice.

Best indoor trainer is proper fitting and functioning outdoor gear. If you ride indoors because it is wet, cold, snowy or hot, you are missing half the fun. All indoor trainers and indoor training hours SUCK. Did you get that, THEY SUCK. Get outdoors and enjoy life.

I live in wisconsin, I work full time and also am paying my through college. Don't always have time to gear up and ride, nor the money to buy all expensive outdoor gear. And riding a road bike through the snow is ******** and dangerous, not to mention the wear and tear it would put on my bike (salt on the roads=rust). I am very aware of the benefits of riding outdoors, and would definitely prefer that, but preference is not always an option.

I can't imagine riding in winter. Blowing, drifting snow, black ice, and salty roads are almost an everyday occurance.

i bought a traveltrac comp fluid trainer for around $150 from performance. It's probably not near as good as a Kurt Kinetic, but i've put 1000 miles on it no problems. Also it's not as loud as those god awful wind trainers.

Not too different than skiing, dress right, which takes 10 minutes tops and your off. I use my merlin campy bike. same bike i ride in summer. have bee doing it eight year. Actually you need far less clothing than you think, much less than skiing as you generate so much heat. When it is snowing heavily I stay in and ride my Kirk rock and roll but I far prefer outdoors down to 0 F.

Minoura's make some excellent trainers, but you will have to go to their web site to find a dealer near you. They are not as popular as the Kurt and Cycleops but they are strong, sturdy and quiet.

Last year, I rode a kurt kinetic (which I have had for years). This winter, I am going to try inside ride e-motion rollers.

Save for a used Kurt Kinetic. If you are going to any serious mileage indoors, it will be worth it.
